Wanna hear Another cool Buddy Emmons ride?

Post by Dave Robbins »

Check out his part of the instrumental ride on a tune titled My Eyes Are On The Prize from the Gene Watson CD called Jesus Is All I Need (SOR-0108). It'll give ya something to sink yer teeth into for awhile!
Also on the same album Buddy has a great solo on Amazing Grace .
The entire album is covered in great Buddy Emmons fills, licks and rides on balads and everything.
This album rates right up there with Buddy's instructional "Shuffles" album, as far as I'm concerned, in text book "how to play steel guitar the right way!"
I have added this CD to all my other favorite albums featuring Buddy.
Check it out! Rates five "smileys" for my vote! Image Image Image Image Image

Can you post it Dave? Mp3 or something of just the solo?

Dave;

Since it's on Step One Records, it's out-of-print. Unless there is stock remaining in a store somewhere.

When I was getting products from SOR, I asked for a list of the recordings that Buddy was playing on. They told me it would be a whole lot easier to list the ones he wasn't on. There are treasures out there!!

Great examples of Mr. E. Sounds like they were cut around the same time as the old Duane Eddy album. Thanx for sharing with us.
I always favorted his "Back Home Again, in Indiana" from his Steel Guitar Jazz album. Flawless and full of expression.

Just so you all know, those 2 clips had been on the gospel side of the Rebel™, Ricky and Jeff website for well over a year.

Frank
Buddy some years ago released a E9 instructional album complete with the tab for all the tunes. It included such shuffles as I Just Destroyed The World, Crazy Arms, Touch My Heart,Walk Me To The Floor, Swingin Doors, and many more! About 10(?) shuffles in all. Man, it was great to just put on and listen to Buddy play tune after tune, stretching out on everyone. Nothing but Buddy on steel, with minimal accompaniment (which I beleive were all played by him as well). The tab was great too because you could learn how Buddy "really" played all that stuff! Still got my copy and the tab, but they'll pry them from my cold dead hands when I'm gone! Image

Dave, The instructional material you are describing sounds like the "Learn to Play the pedal steel guitar (E9)" course on the Buddy Emmons Website. I had a "Learn to Play" album put out by the Emmons Guitar Company that featured Doug Jernigan back in the mid 70's that was great. I will have to pick up this one sometime. Thanks for the tip! Bob

Buddy's Learn to Play album is one of, if not "The best" instructional album "and" listening album ever made! Wanna hear "shuffles" 'til your ears bleed? This is the one! Want to learn how to play them? Want to have tab too? This was the one!!!!!
I think that it might have been passed up as a great "listening" album because of it being designed as an instructional album and package. But, on every cut Buddy stretches out, ad libs and all, just Buddy, no guitars, fiddles or anything else to get in the way of listening to "steel guitar". Then, you can refer to the tab and see exactly what and how he did it, note by note and finger by finger.
If you didn't get this one when it was available you missed a great "listening" and "learning" experience. I know of no other means available to learn this great selection of Country shuffles the right way than from the man himself! The only thing better than this instructioanl package would have been to learn "face to face" from the Master directly.
Beg, borrow, or steal this one! Image

My first visit to St. Louis was in 1981. The "Learn To Play" album was the first thing I bought. It is a great course and I have learned some licks on it that I would have never found on my own. I sure recommend the Expedition E9th course as well. It has some really fast picking as well as some slow tunes. Listen to "I Love You Because" and hear how many notes Emmons puts in such a few bars. No wonder he is the most copied steel player of all time....Paul

Thanks Graham,
Makes you feel a combination of acute futility and deep inspiration at the same time. Theres's so much music just in those two breaks it's ridiculous. Time to go practice.

Gene Watson singing and Buddy on steel, it
