Your amp will get more bass response if it is sitting directly on the stage. That is why jazz bass players used to set up on hollow boxes before bass amplifiers were around.
but it seems like that effect would be negated once you mic the amp. since I started using one my stage volume has come way down, and less sound guys are telling me that my stage volume is to erratic.
the amp stand is the way to go

Ditto what Al said about missing the high end. For years I played with the amp on the floor and got what I thought was a great sound. The problem is high end tones are directional where bass tones are not. I tended to overcompensate the high end that was going under my ears. When people told me my sound was rather tinny I started using a stand and wouldn't go without one.

I use the PV stand for my NV 400 & 112, but I also use it for my Twin Reverb or 59 Baseman. I use a piece of angle iron for support for the backs of the Fenders. Does anyone know of some kind of expandable/adjustable metal piece that could be used for this. The solid piece is a pain in the @#$% to carry along. It would be better if it could be folded or if you could loosen a couple of wing nuts to make packing it more practical.
Thanks in advance for any ideas.

I used to use stands. They contributed to my ears ringing for being up behind my head for so many years. I'll have to agree with Dan T. on this one. No stand for me no more. I feel like my tone is better. I've been unusally stubborn about this lately to the point of being fired over it. But my ears just can't stand the "Stand" anymore. Since I got my Nash112, I just put it right on the floor. If I take the 1000 it sits in the bottom of the road case on rollers. Its still low enough to the floor that it doesn't effect my tone. Keeps the dB out of my ears doing it this way. For years I loved the sound I got out of the amps up high off the floor on stands and in chairs etc. I saw other steel players doing it this way and thought thats what I was supposed to do. Bunch of musicians are hard of hearing because of this, although I doubt they will admit it. I am, and its because I was inexperienced and allowed band leaders and other pickers to tell me how they wanted my rig set up, and now my ears will never recover from it. Mine stays on the floor. Take my advice, protect your ears if you are using stands up behind your head. Don't learn the hard way as I did. Just my 2 cents.
[This message was edited by Bill C. Buntin on 02 January 2005 at 06:35 AM.]

The $20.00 Musician's Friend model is great. It folds up & stores inside the amp. Keeps the amp off the floor & tilted at about a 35 degree angle. I agree with everything everyone has said about sound when it's a solid state amp, but when I play my Fender Twin, I want it on the ground, about 6-8 feet in back of me. Then I can feel it.

I just got the Musicians Friend stand too, it holds my Vegas 400 with no problem. I like to set my amp behind someone I'm mad at.
