Steel, steel everywhere.
Hey all,
maybe it was always there, and only since I started playing does it seem that I hear steel guitar all over the place. Watching a movie called "L.I.E" the other night, there it was coming out of the car stereo of one of the characters. Heard some all over a new David Gray track in the elevator here at work. "My Own Private Idaho" sure enough, Bill Stafford and his Stafford Elegante. In the deli the other day, heard a song I've always despised, that sappy thing that goes "What did you think/I would say at this moment/When I'm faced with the knowledge/That you just don't love me..." blue-eyed soul not exactly to my taste, but some cool steel playing. Anybody know who played on it? From the mid-80's I think... and more and more... Elton John's "Tiny Dancer", funny and cool that some pop producers bring our beloved instrument along for the ride, wish it would happen more...anybody else experienced-noticed this phenomenon?
[This message was edited by Gerald Menke on 09 July 2003 at 01:16 PM.]

Yo Gerald. Man, a real favorite recent movie, Almost Famous had me rediscovering Tiny Dancer. They actually did an edit job on the song that is better than the original release. That 'tripe' you just described---you sure make it tough for me to admit that I've always liked that one.
That's Skunk Baxter (Doobie) picking. Doing a real good job too. Seems to be a whole lot of steel lurking in commercials. I don't know how to interpret the significance of that. If it's good enuff for RotoRooter but not good enuff for Music Row........
