My Latest Effort (Cousin Herb Henson Tribute)

Post by Smiley Roberts »

This is a project that I played on a couple of months ago. It's been several years in the making,as you will guess, when you see the line-up. The guy that produced it,(Dennis Payne)is the same guy that produced the Chubby Checker Country album that I played on several years ago. He,also, wrote "Highway Patrol".(Jr. Brown)
BTW,it's long. Almost 9 mins. My little part comes in at 6:20. Hope you like it.

Smiley,
I was out to the Herb Henson site and noticed in the musicians' listing, on fiddle, Jim Ungar. Is Jim Ungar and Jay Ungar one and the same?

Jay Ungar has played with the likes of David Bromberg and wrote a timeless piece called
"Ashokan Farewell", which became the theme
song thru-out the PBS series, "The Civil War".

Just curious.

Well I've heard it! Matter of fact, Smiley is our house guest this weekend and he brought me the CD and we all listened to it. As I've stated numerous times, Smiley is one of the better Nashville players and it's very evident in this recording. Lloyd, your copy is forthcoming but I got mine first! Image

Chip,

No it's not the same Unger. But, I'll say this. I've worked with alot of good fiddle players but none of them are in the class of Jim Unger.
He and I played two gigs together this weekend and we work alot of sessions together. And he's also on most of my c.d.s.
The guy's a trip to work with.

BTW Smiley,
How do I get a copy of your project with Murph and the Starlighters?

Very cool Smiley! I e-mailed the link to our mutual friend Rod G in Vancouver - and have fond memories of the night we met Dennis Payne at some dive you took Rod and I out to! Your usual great performance.

Thanx gang. I really appreciate the kind words.
Who did the guitar solo in #7?
Erik,I really don't know, since this thing was done over a period of years,& portions of it were done in CA.,& portions were done in NashVILE. Some of the performers have already passed on. Johnny Russell, for example.

Smiley, I was fortunate to be at the big Cousin Herb 20th bash in Bakersfield in '63 when Ken Nelson had the Capitol country roster and it was quite a program. I kick myself for not buying the big double LP set that was recorded that night. Somewhere there should be the master for that night that could be made available. That was the first time I saw Red Rhodes play in person also and was impressed with his professional touch.
