Where is Pete Kleinow?

Post by Buck Dilly »

When I heard "Guilded Palace of Sin" I worked my fingers to the bone, to simulate what I thought I was hearing. Sneaky Pete opened a door for me, and I started listening to this strange "new" instrument. That tone! I followed his playing and career as best I could, and enjoyed everything I could find. I even got to open for a late version of the FBB's, and I met him. What is he doing now? Is he on any recent recorded material?

In 1976 or so, in Poughkeepsie, NY. It was a small venue near half a dozen colleges. The band had Gib Gilbeau and others. I was sort of focused on the steel that night. Pete's tone was remarkable. His feet moved like the wind. ALSO- thanks for the website. I'll pick up a CD. Buck

I have opened for Garth recently in our area (NW NJ). Do they have a schedule and will they be in NY, NJ, or Woodstock NY area?

My band opened for the Burrito's, at the Lone Star Cafe', in N.Y., back in the early 80's. Pete was very friendly and open to discussion that night. I was rather starstruck myself. He was one of my hero's then and still is. He was gracious enough to let me use his twin Session 400 setup. I sat right in front of them, and damn near got blasted off my seat when I started to play.He played with the volumes close to 10 back then. Needless to say, it was one of the highlights of my career.

Pete broke all the stems off the pots on those Session 400 amps, because he said the tone was set the way he liked it.

When we opened for the Burritos back
in '75 (in Ithaca NY), Pete was using a
Fender Showman head & cabinet. He also
had two 8 string Strat type pickups mounted
next to each other. I'm not sure how they
were wired though.

I was in a band in 77 that opened for the Burritos as well, had Gib in that, Pete used 2 sessions set up on opposite sides of the stage, does anyone remember the cartoon he had pasted to the top of his steel? I think the guitar player (Bobby Cochran, or something like that) was from Stepenwolf, and the bass players last name was Maxwell who was Mac Davis former steel player, now this thread has me humming "close up the honky tonks"
