Emmons On Midnight Jamboree
I hope that many of you listened to the Ernest Tubb Mid Night Jamboree tonite, or rather, this morning.
Buddy was on with Johnny Bush and sounded fantastic.
I had planned on being there. I know that John Hughey was. Anyone else make it?
BUddy is still the King.

The Big "E" amazed everyone, again, last night,
by playing w/ a thumb pick,& NO FINGER PICKS!! At first,I thought he was using clear plastic picks but, upon closer inspection,(1.5 feet from his guitar) nothing, nada, nil! Just when you think you've seen him do EVERYTHING,he comes up & throws another "zinger" at'cha. If you think its easy, try it sometime.(on the job)

Buddy's played with no finger picks at several times going back years that I'm aware of.
I went to a Willie Nelson concert in October of 1987, the day the stock market crashed 25%. Already reeling in shock from that, I proceeded to have my mind blown by no picks on the fingers of Big E.
"Buddy... no picks?!"
"Well, uh... yeah, occasionally."
It was a great show, incidentally. Freddie Powers, Paul Buskirk, Johnny Gimble on the bandstand, and a clean-shaven Johnny Bush on drums.

I was sitting in the front on Buddy's side of the stage less that ten feet from the Standel amp and all I can say is "WOW".
Smiley is right no finger picks just a blade style thumb pick "orange".
Buddy's thought process and execution are just incredible!!!!!!!
[This message was edited by Graham Bland on 13 April 2003 at 07:25 AM.]

[This message was edited by Graham Bland on 13 April 2003 at 07:26 AM.]

Funny, I remember back 40-odd years, when that would have been quite normal, but special, nevertheless. That ET and Justin have both been gone for years, and yet the legacy of ET's show still continues, never ceases to amaze me in this world of "modern country music". Audience loyalty? Who else has a radio show that's gone on that many years? (Eat your heart out..."rock stars".)
Back then, it really was "magic" to most of us musicians. We would strain to hear it on the car radio on the way home from a gig...that show from "Nashville---home of Country Music". Man, I used to get the biggest thrill outa that! How many thousands of us used to dream of doing that show, or at the least, be there...just once. The young ones today just don't understand. We know what it was like back then...they've only "heard" what it was like. Can we ever convey that feeling?
Not hardly.

I concur with Smiley. Buddy's tone without finger picks, especially on the hot C6th single note runs was awesome. I really enjoyed his intro and solo on "Walk'in After Midnight" that the girl in the black dress sang. It was great to hear Gregg Galbraith hitting some hot licks with David Smith on bass and the legendary Buddy Harmon on drums. Another highlight was the fiddles of Hoot, JB and Eddie Stubbs. Johnny Bush really deserves a salute for putting this on his show. For a few moments in time, we who were there were priviledged to the greatest musical talent on the face of the earth "the Maestro"

Paul,
At the time of this posting, the show with J.B. isn't on the page yet, but here's the link for when it is... http://www.etrecordshop.com/mj.htm
Btw...there's several other good ones you can listen to while you wait.

Dave, you're right on that. I completely agree: "He still never ceases to amaze me."
Some pictures are coming in and I'll try to get them posted ASAP! When the ET site has the show archived, there will be a link on the page, too.
