Russ Pahl

Post by Ken Lang »

I see Russ Pahl is one of 5 candidates in the steel guitar instrumentalist category for the Academy of Country Music awards. The other 4 are familiar names but Russ is not, at least to me. I know he is from mn. but that is about all. Any thoughts or information on someone so honored.

Congratulations, Russ.

I've known Russ since the mid 70's. He's from the Minneapolis area. Both he and Mike Cass used to both teach at the Pedal Steel Guitar Emporium for Clem Schmitz. The first place I saw him was with the western swing band the Sky Blue Water Boys. He was also a member of the band Great Plains. They had a couple of hits in the early 90's. He toured with Don Williams for quite a while. The last time I saw him was in Nashville at the Palace in the late 80's. He said he was pretty much just doing sessions around town. Nice guy, fine player.

I also remember the Sky Blue Water boys with Becky Thompson playing at Mr. Nibs every Monday night. We'd go watch Monday night football, when that was cool, and listen to Russ, Dan Lund and the band. Talked with Russ a few times, a very nice guy. Also heard him sit in with a funk band next door at Duffy's playing steel through a Leslie, doing organ parts. Also a fine guitar player.
