Woweeeee!
I just got through watching "Austin City Limits" for the first time in a very long time. Somehow I had been unable to find it for a long while since I don't have cable.
Merle Haggard was first. And ole Norm Hamlet was just great. As he always was and is. IMO, one of the most unsung heroes of our beloved instrument. Merle's show was great. I also think Bonnie Owens adds soo much to Merle. I just love to hear her sing. A most gracious lady indeed.
And to top it off, they had Johnny Gimble on fiddle and mandolin. What a star! Never be another Johnny Gimble. EVER!
Then after that I saw a group I had not had the pleasure of seeing before. They were the "Deraliers" And Woweeeeeee! Them sapsuckers were awesome. And that feller (I think it said Marty Muse in the ending "credits"-am I correct?) playin that Sho-Bud cooked! Wow. I have not been thrilled like this since 1998.
Renewed my faith in country music with a 'sprinkli' of Elvis type R & R and 60's Rockabilly. They were just flat good. I could listen to them and especially that steel player all night. I have never heard of any of them. But I know I sure did like 'em. Hope to see them again sometime.
Needless to say I am on cloud nine tonight. Jes' had to share it with you folks.
God bless them all, and all of you,
carl

Carl,
I "stumbled" onto Austin City Limits about halfway through Hag's set. Norm sounded very good on his GFI. Looked like he was playing through a Nashville 1000.
The Derailers are a contrast to what we usually hear on country radio and see on country videos. I particularly liked "I Don't Believe I'll Fall in Love Today" and "Waltz of the Angels". It was a treat to hear Marty Muse on his Sho-Bud, both E9th and C6th.
A few months ago, the Derailers were getting some TV play with their video "Bar Exam", a real honky-tonker. In the dressing room interview portion at the end of last night's show they paid homage to Ray Price and others. Good show, ACL.

I think that show taped in 1999. Marty's just great on there. And along with classic steelin' he's got the classic "just sittin' here making it look easy" stage presence DOWN. Great playing. Cable or not, look around for the PBS stations, you should be able to get one almost anywhere, while the funding still holds out...
