Doug "Ernest Bovine" Livingston in concert

Well, it wasn't exactly a concert, Just a gig at a local cantina backing up a singer. But there was no guitar player. Just steel, bass and drums. Doug played every lead and fill. It was a pleasure to behold.

It was also a lesson in humility. Doug is an amazing player. I don't have the words to convey the degree to with I hold him in awe. He never seemed to run out of ideas, he never played any cliches and he never repeated himself the whole time I was there. (I couldn't stay all night, much as I wanted to.) Whether it was on a swing tune or a new tune or an old standard, Doug just tore it up.

Come to think of it, it really was a concert. A good one.

I haven't heard Earnest for well over twenty years when he was an 'honorary' member' of our band for one night in London - he 'knocked me for six' back then, and I don't suppose he's got any worse

I'm sure it was a musical lesson and a treat! It "hurts" a lot more when you have to stand beside him and try to solo after he does. But he's just that way on the piano too!!

Viva Fresh cantina in Burbank. Doug and Mike Johnstone both play there a lot.
