Mike,

Steel in Chicago is almost gone. We have a handfull of AWESOME steel players and most of them don't play regular gigs. The music scene has dried up. However, there is a pretty new band in Chicago called "The Hoyle Brothers". They play traditional country stuff and have a steel player always. However, they are playing on Friday the 14th. Maybe some other steel players on the forum can jump in. I know that Mark Durante is on the forum and he plays steel with the Waco Brothers. Maybe they have a gig this weekend? Mark, you out there?

Cheers!
Mark

If you can catch Paul Carestia, you won't be dissapointed. I heard him with Dallas Wayne at Fitzgerald's last 4th of July and he knocked me out. He plays with Susie Dobbs and Way Out West, among others...

I'll be playing steel in the bedroom of my home a mile and half from the Chicago city line! Image Yeah things really dried up around here(have for years now)-Glad to see that Paul C is out there doing it-He and I have discussed the situation before-So many of the "long time" players in this area have moved away, quit playing,or(as in my case) don't get anymore calls for it due to the lack of (country) music scene here which has not made the anticipated comeback that it should have at the turn of the Millenium-The early '90's were good years for my playing career around here-Oh to be "back in the day" Image

Image... And with few opportunities to do such-love of playing the instrument out with other musicians means that I usually have to drive a good distance to play for little or no pay-(I usually wind up in the Joliet area where some of my old pickin' buddys are) Back in the day I would not have taken my push/pull out of the house for less than $50-Now thinking back I would pay the $50 to be able to play again some of the fun summertime festivals where we opened up for well known Country Music Performers<FONT SIZE=1 COLOR="#8e236b"><p align=CENTER>[This message was edited by PAUL WARNIK on 15 February 2003 at 08:28 AM.]</p></FONT>

Howard R-I have been there too! Image-Actually something that used to be referred to as the "Illiana" circuit which for me included Chicagoland mostly the southwest suburbs from the Joliet (not to be confused with Toilet) region-to northwestern Indiana<FONT SIZE=1 COLOR="#8e236b"><p align=CENTER>[This message was edited by PAUL WARNIK on 15 February 2003 at 03:22 PM.]</p></FONT>

Sorry I missed this post. I was out of town. The Hoyle Brothers play every Friday (at least throught March) at the Empty Bottle. I forget their steel player's name, but he plays a right fine Emmons push-pull.

Paul- did you ever play a place in Shorewood (near Joliet) named "Greener Pastures"? I used to play there a bunch back in the early 80s. Some clubs on Chicago's southside too "Ryans Pub" back in the country rock glory daze...

Dyke C-used to play in Shorewood at BABA'S (which I think is still there) and a place called Foggy Mountain? (which has changed) but I played more frequently at The Captain's Lounge (Channahon) and at Fox And Hounds and The Power Station (Coal City) A couple of the guys that I used to work with still play country on Saturday nights and have a Sunday jam session at Wendell's in Braceville-and Dyke speaking of glory days-I sure that you remember "Pork and the Havanna Ducks"<FONT SIZE=1 COLOR="#8e236b"><p align=CENTER>[This message was edited by PAUL WARNIK on 16 February 2003 at 10:12 AM.]</p></FONT>

Paul, as a matter of fact that's who I was playing with at the time! (1980, 81) I was the guitar player and occasionally doubled on steel when he was in between Danny Weaver, Kenny Holycross, and Brian Wilkie on steel (who is playing somewhere in Chicago now). My wife and I played some gigs with Pork early last year, lots of fun and the first time he has used a steel on his originals in a long time! I remeber some of the clubs you are talking about, that's when people USED to go out and support live music! Image

Brian Wilkie is the steel player with the Hoyle Brothers. Brian was my roommate in Nashville Tn. for around 4 or 5 years back in the late eighties and early ninety's. He is an incredibly talented musician and plays great Guitar, Slide guitar, Steel and Bass. He also plays a variety of styles (Jazz, Rock, R & B and Country) and is great at all of them. I believe that the gig at the Empty Bottle is an early gig, like 5 to 9 maybe. If you get a chance, go and hear him, he would love to meet some other steel players from the Chicago area. He is out on a road trip this week but he will be back next week. BTW, he bought the Emmons off of T.C. Furlong in the early eighty's. <FONT SIZE=1 COLOR="#8e236b"><p align=CENTER>[This message was edited by Bob Watson on 19 February 2003 at 07:15 PM.]</p></FONT>

"He bought the Emmons off of T.C.Furlong in the early eighty's"-T.C. is probably the "Windy City" area's best known steeler-He was an Emmons dealer back then and about the same time I bought two brand new Emmons steels from him-My faithful '66 D-10 Bolt-on also came by way of T.C.-Tommy will probably have a booth at the Dolton,IL. Guitar Expo this Sunday Image See You There! Image

Chicago Steel update

My PSG teacher, Ken Champion, will be filling in for Brian Wilke with the Hoyle Brothers on Friday night (Feb. 21) at the Empty Bottle, and then on Saturday night (Feb. 22) at Martyr's. They play great honky-tonk music and Ken Champion can sure play the pedal steel!
