Womenz steel players

Post by Melinda Dauley »

A lot of men that I have met who play steel are the same sort of men...there is a raging river of emotion beneath the calm demeanor.
What I'm wondering, from all steel players, is are most women steel players the same with the raging river of emotion beneath the calm outside?
Any totally amazing steel players that are women? I've never heard of any so far...

If by "amazing" you mean truly excellent at playing great music on their instrument, Joan Cox, Cindy Cashdollar and Barbara Mandrell are some of the names that come to mind...

Sarah Jory from Great Britain is reputed to be real good - I've not heard her though. I still have hopes for my daughter, but she is distracted by other instruments these days!

Any woman with a "Raging River of Emotion" sounds great to me! Image Keep em coming.
All seriousness aside I heard Sarah Jory in 1989 and she was great and from Great Britain I think. Joan Cox is the only woman steeler I've heard for a while and she is equally a great player.

Sara Jory is indeed brilliant.I saw her at Scotty's in 1984 when she was just 17 and she already had Buddy Emmons' early E9 style down cold.Donna Hammit is another good one. There was a great non-pedal player in L.A. in the 50s-60s named Marion Hall who's still living but I understand she has retired. In her day,she could tear up a Stringmaster and had a great bluesy Western swing style. -MJ-

Let's not forget the forum's own Susan Alcorn who is one of the most adventurous steel players out there these days.

I saw a video of Sarah Jory playing a ballad at the Texas Convention a few years ago and she is terrific. My buddy Janet Lynn is another fine steel player who plays several of the shows I play. See plays great and is a very sweet lady.

Sarah Jory is amazing. To say she is a good or even great player is an understatement. She sits at her steel and gets totally engrossed in what she is doing and has so much fun playing. She is a joy to behold after watching male players with serious faces watching their strings and concentrating real hard on their playing. Sarah can play perfectly and interact with her audience and her band all at the smae time. She's a true entertainer. Anyone who can get to see her should make a point of doing so, you won't be disappointed.

It's good to see so many positive things being said about Sarah Jory. I actually taught her to play pedal steel. It was fortunate that her father brought her to me at an early age. Without doubt she was one of my better pupils and I'm very proud that she has gone on to make a good living out of the music business. My best ever pupil was a guy called Tim Pickins (real name!!!) He was a real natural but gave it up after a few years. It would be great to see more ladies taking up the steel guitar.
[This message was edited by Ken Byng on 15 February 2003 at 04:24 AM.]

Melinda,
Let's not forget Deloris Hancock in Burlington, NC. She is a wonderful Christian Lady who Indorsed "Emmons", and I belive she still plays one. I had the honor of meeting this Lady when I worked for the "Emmons" Guitar Co. a couple of years ago. Her LP was one of MANY in the Front of the factory for sale. She came into the shop several times for string purchaces. It was a plesure to talk to this Lady. If she is reading this post, Let me say 'Hello, Mrs. Hancock, and God Bless You'. She CAN PLAY, Folks, & she has her OWN style. Wish there were more woman playing this great Instrument we all LOVE. Image

Wanda Vick, she plays pedal steel and so many other instruments, she's an ace on all of them. Used to see her every night on the old TNN. Ck. out Crowbear's post "Would the Ladies Please Rise" in Steel Players section earlier this month.

Hello Melinda,
I was surprised to see your address on your posting, and you can see why by mine. I haven't seen any other postings from Tacoma steel guitar players, and no women from anywhere nearby. Kind of a surprise this morning.

Marion Hall played pedal Bigsby standing up, when was the last time you saw someone do that? Lee Jeffries spoke with her a number of years ago.
