Paul Franklin at the Palomino

Interesting, if anyone hasn't been to Larry Black's pages on the Black Brothers then I recommend it as an interesting website: http://www.theblackbrothers.net/
If you look at the Photo Gallery section a series of rows fo photos covering Larry's career will load.

Now for the Paul Franklin link.
On the Black Brother's photo page, the sixth row down, second across; there's a photo credited as Paul Franklin, Emmy Lou Harris, Larry Black, Linda Hargrove. Palomino Club circa 1970.

Now, somehow I suspect that this date is about three years out, and I'd be curious as to whether anyone can help me with it.

Why do I think it's a little out?
I submit:

In 1970 Emmylou was an unknown in Washington, although she had fled an unsuccessful stay in N.Y. (despite cutting and issuing a solo LP in 1969) that same year.
Linda Hargrove was in Nashville and didn't start travelling to California until 1972 at the earliest, maybe even 1973 when she was invloved in Michael Nesmith's Countryside label.

Paul was still in Detroit, he didn't move to Nashville until 1972, where I figure he worked with Larry Black in Barbara Mandrell's Do-Rights not long getting into town. I'm pretty sure he didn't do any West Coast trips before he moved to Nashville.

So I figure the earliest the pic may be is about 1972, but it's more likely it's from 1973 when Emmylou and Linda Hargrove both had a more of a name for themselves.
So perhaps the Do-Rights were on tour on the West Coast with Mandrell and did the gig.
Emmlou had split for Washington after Gram Parsons death in late 1973, and she spent most of 1974 working there locally until her record deal.
She didn't start actually touring until 1975 with her Hot Band.
So, I suppose the pic have been 1974, or even 1975, although Bobby Black did a stint as Mandrell's steel player around that time.

So, anyone got any ideas about the pic or time it was taken?

Jack Daniels' web design Co. put that site together, they do some real nice work, but with Larry's photo album it's a wonderful collection.

I played with Larry Black (mostly at Cowtown in San Jose) from '73 until late '75 when he joined Linda Hargrove's band. Later, he played with Barbara Mandrell. At least that's my best recollection.

Before '73, he was playing with the Cowtown band, and earlier, Hoyet Henry and the Black Brothers, with Bobby.

Jason, guessing solely from ELH's overall looks(wolf whistle), I'd say you are right on the money at '72. By 74/75, the hair was even longer and she'd lost more of her innocent look. And she's still one of the most beautiful pros ever.

That's ironic, I'm starting to wonder if it's later as well.
So, we're looking at Larry Black with Hargrove's band in '75, Emmylou was a star by '75 and Linda H. woukld have had at least two albums by this time.

Here's the kicker though, I've just heard that Paul Franklin would have finished with Mandrell in late '72 (then Julian Tharpe came in), and I must admit I was trying to work from the assumption that Paul and Larry were on hiatus from Mandrell's band, as I couldn't imagine Larry being in L.A. while he had the regular gig at the Cowtown to cover. (a big thanks for those dates Pete Grant)

I will say this about the Pal' it was the big equaliser.
In the 1960s the talent night might have people like Gram Parsons, Brian Hyland, Del Shannon, Garland Frady, Don Epperson, Mayf Nutter and Jerry Inman ..despite some of them already having hits and recording careers!

I've also heard that Gram Parsons used to frequent the Pal' as a rather drunken patron in the 1970s, but a few stories have gone around about him and Emmylou working as warmups for other acts on some nights.

Despite all this, I remain uncertain.

I'd have to go with 72/73 as the date of the photo in question. I was hanging out/playing at the PAL "alot" during that timeframe and when I viewed the photo, it felt like I could remember that very night. I know I saw Paul there just once during those years and that photo looks real familiar to me.

That seems like a lifetime ago. My guess is 74 or early 75. I did not know Linda until 74. We were there performing her new release.

Paul, thanks for dropping the line, I guess when we consider a few of the posts here, 1975 looks pretty good.
Linda had cut a couple of great albums for Elektra Records at the time.

A quick note for anyone curious about the Palomino, the Tony Booth band held the residency in 1970-1971, then Larry Booth took it over. Then Jimmy Snyder in 1972-1973, and by the end of '73 Jerry Inman came in to lead the band.
In the early 1970s Garland Frady and Marvin Caves had the Sunday band, later Glenn Castleberry band took over that for a time, and so on.

Johnny worked at the Pal' in 1965, I believe he was hired in to replace Jerry Inman in the Gene Davis band.
He cut a 45 with that group, Gene Davis left for Roger Miller's band and Red Rhodes took over the group.

It's interesting, but Del Shannon used to hang out at the Pal' quite a lot, and actually brought Carver to the attention of Imperial/Liberty Records and Carver split the Pal' in 1966. Most of his records were apparently cut in Nashville.

Jason: I worked for about one month at the Foothill club with Johnny before he defected to the Palomino. (1965) Do you have any idea as to where he is now, what he's doing, etc.?

Well James, you suprised me with that one. Carver at the Foothil!

I believe he has a dancehall type senior show going on at a venue he owns somewhere in Tenn.
I'm not sure of the details, email me and I'll see what I can dig up.
Forumite Ron Elliott probably still works in his band, I hear it's a good show.

Johnny plays every Saturday night at his own establishment in Lebanon Tenn, The Carver Fun Center. Ron is his steel player.

I believe he has a dancehall type senior show
