Question for Johnny Cox

Hi Johnny,
I'm curious about those "tribute" albums that you've been one of the players on: like the steel guitar tribute to Eric Clapton, or the Eagles, or (was it?) ZZ Top, etc. What's the story on those? Who's idea was this, and why? They're certainly not being actively promoted to the steel guitar community; are they promoted elsewhere? Why were they recorded? What's up with all this?

I would be interested in the background as well. I purchased the Eagles one from Amazon first (loved it) and then the Eric Clapton from CD Now. (I note that the Clapton one was dated 2001 and the Eagles 2002 but the first I knew of them was doing searches on Amazon and CD Now in October or so). Their web sites included sound files on quite a few tracks but without those the surrounding information on who,what etc was quite sparse. Last time I checked out the ZZ Top info there was little there as to who was playing.

As the two albums (and possibly the ZZ Top one) are on the CMH label I guess there is some overall theme of Steel Guitar Tributes to ..... Seems a good idea (but it could do with a little more publicity).

I noticed there was a Steel guitar Tribute to Garth Brooks also listed - but I was not too familiar with the musicians (ie not Johnny, Gary Morse or Robby Turner etc.) Maybe that has no connection.

Mike Fereday.

Gary Morse is currently with Dwight Yokum, and was with Highway 101, Ricky Skaggs, McBride & The Ride, and numerous others. He's also been performing with Tanya Tucker recently.

Robby Turner is a phenominal steel player, and has played with a ton of Nashville's biggest names in the industry.

The same can be said about Johnny Cox as has been said about the above. He's definately one of the finest steel players in the industry, and his contributions are many.

Jim, those CDs are produced here in Nashville for a company that markets to
places that sell sound-a-likes, retro and tribute type projects. You wont find them in mainstream record stores. As far as my part goes, I am simply hired to play on a few tracks per CD. The guy that produces them has free rein to use several different players. The company will sell them to those of us that want to buy them for resale, I just have never tryed that. Hope I have been of some help.

Thanks for the info on what Gary Morse is doing these days etc. My previous response was a little confusing. I meant to say it was the musicians listed on the Garth Brooks tribute that I was unfamiliar with (and I can not recall who those were!).

I have thoroughly enjoyed witnessing the twin talents of Robbie and Johnny at St Louis.
