Rick Price & Jason Roberts.......

I had to share this with you all. Had one of those magic nights last night in Giddings working with Darrell McCall and I am still high over it. Rick Price was on steel and was blowin' doors on his old Emmons. Unbelievable and SO in tune. Tone for days and he couldn't miss anything he went for. I can't figure out how someone who is already a well established monster finds a way to keep notching it up, but I swear he just keeps getting better all the time and it is a real pleasure to hear him play. I've got to tell you, it is incredibly inspiring to play next to that guy. The only hard part is trying to take mental notes and play my part at the same time.

THEN... as if that wasn't enough, we were treated to one Jason Roberts on fiddle (also a fellow steeler) who came out and was kind enough to grace the stage. I was in twin fiddle heaven all night! That's only the second time we've been able to work together but it's like we've known each other for a long time. What an incredible talent and as a lot of you know, a great person as well. His father, Vern, and Grandpa also came out and we all had the time of our lives. It was one of those nights that I wished could have gone on and on. No one wanted to quit.

Thanks also to Smiley Reynolds (legend) on drums and to Bruce Beerstadt on bass & vocals who did an outstanding job (as usual) of fronting the band. And Darrell sang his tail off as always. He'll make you want to play.

I got home at around 5:00 a.m. and still got up early and I feel charged! That's what it's all about for me and I was lucky to have been there. For those in the Texas area, make it a point to get out and listen to Rick sometime soon. I think he's doing a bunch more gigs with Darrell. Gotta hear him.

You are so right about Rick. I am in awe of the guy's talent. You guys evidently had talent out the wazoo on the bandstand. Say "hi" to all those guys for me - especially Bruce (haven't talked with him since he was living and picking in Corpus).
Are you coming back to Corpus area with either Darrell or Justin anytime soon?

Kinda funny Bobby. I had the same thing happen, only in reverse one time, with you. We played Big Balls, one of the first times that Jake and Justin played there. I was diggin it so much, listening to you and the guys, NOT making mental notes on what I was supposed to be playing. I remember you taking the steel ride on "Way to Survive" as I was in "LaLa Land". One of those times you never live down

Jason Roberts used to play a gig with us (Jim Snider, et al, backing Monte "Hawkeye" Henson) in San Antone each year during the Stock Show. He was only 15 at the time (12 years ago). His Mom would bring him as he was too young to drive. She'd carry him off right after the gig so he could get up in time for school the next day. What a player he was then. There was no doubt he was gonna do well and get snapped up quick.

For anyone who doesn't know, he's been Ray Benson's sidekick for a number of years with the Wheel.

I've never heard Rick, but have heard many great things about him. Must have been some night.

I gotta chime in too. Rick Price is a treasure. In addition to being one soulful player and incredible technician, he posseses so much knowledge about steel guitar and country music in general. He always has a great story and a joke for you too. And he has done me so many favors that I've lost count. I can't thank him enough...Except I shoulda bought that '66 from him while I had the chance!

And Jason has always knocked me out. Just so gifted....He's been here in the studio and he's such a pro. I can't hardly imagine Bobby Flores and him together on stage...So many awesome players down here....Just makes you glad you live under the "X"!

Danny - thanks and it's great to hear from you. You mentioned a couple more pals 'o mine, Jim Snider & Hawkeye Henson. Jim works with us every once in awhile with Darrell too. Man, he knows all the old tunes and it's a blast to work with him. Hawkeye got up & sang with us in Vegas last month where we were working with Jake Hooker. Did a great job too.

Yeah, you know Jason is a real integral part of The Wheel and is being featured a bunch as well he should be. His CD is great! I think he plays an old Sho-Bud if I'm not mistaken.

Gary - I'll tell Bruce you said hi. He's playing and singing his tail off. It doesn't look like I'll be around the Corpus area for awhile although I usually get to work the OysterFest with somebody. I played it year before last on steel backing Johnny Rod. and had a blast. I hit a deer (deer hit me!) on the way down and got stopped by the law 'cause I was all Popeye'd out and almost ran late to the gig. The officer was kind enough to give me an escort the rest of the way, which was very cool of him. I set up in about five minutes and barely made it! I think Darrell is playing there this year and Rick will probably be playing steel with him....gotta be there! He will knock your socks off.

Talk about an in-tune steel player, Tommy, that's your world man. What I want to know is, how do you guys do it?

Yes indeed, there was magic in the air. It is a real treat when you can tell that the band is enjoying what they are doing. I think Darrell would have played all night, if they would have let him. Thanks to all the guys for an awesome night of great Real Deal country music. Twin fiddles and steel, WOW!

Darrell is indeed a fun guy to play behind. We've had him at Cowskin Prairie in Grove Ok and John Terry, Steve Matlock, and I have backed him at Granby, Mo and at Sarcoxie, Mo.Always fun, always smiling, always ready with some old tunes that we all remember and love. And Mona? Like Darrell told me, you just gotta see Mona.What a sweetheart...loves the Lord, too.

Hey Larry! How's everything going? It's great to see you on the Forum. Hope to see you & John again soon. For those who may not be familiar with JT, John Terry is one heck of a fine fiddle maker in Carthage, Mo. I am honored to play one of his beautiful fiddles.

Mona is a sweetheart, very true. And what a singer she is!
