Keith Whitley's steel player

Post by Bill Atwood »

Last night on Best of Austin City Limits, both Keith and Lori were run. I particularly like the steel work behind Keith's great performance. Who played the steel in this band and what kind of axe was it? Never got to see the nameplate but the front neck appeared to be on an exceptionaly large body.
Great sound even on TV audio.

The credits scrolled by too fast for me to catch his name, but he was playing a custom Franklin. It had an E9 PedaBro for the front neck and a standard E9 for the back neck. Very cool! Image

Thank you both. I agree, they need to slow those credits down, way too fast for my old eyes! Francis, your family sure make good sounds, you should be proud. Image

As a father I am proud of the fact that both of my boys and my nephew was working with Keith up untill the time of his death. Like I mentioned in the the previous post, Carson, my nephew, played steel, my oldest son Mike Chamberlain played bass and my youngest son Mark was sound engineer. Keith and the band was like a family. Too bad a young man with Keith's talent had to die at such a early age.

Shortly after this, Carson became our(Clint Black's) road mgr. for a brief while. He's a great guy, and a damn fine steel player. He shut the bus door on my finger one night after a show, so I still owe him one. He has since gone on to much bigger things including song writing and label executiveness......oooooh! (That's the one I owed him.)

Jeff, Ron Preston here...I'm STILL wondering if you recived that "Emmons'" name plate that I made in Jewlery class several months ago.
I saw Clints' bus in Hendersonville, TN. If you got it, I sure hope you like it. I made a mold of the name plate and took a jewlers' saw and cut out the background, and replaced the backing with 1964 "Gretsch" Pearluloid plastic.(off an old Drum Kit) I do hope you recieved it.
Regards, Ron.....PS (one of the crew was putting fuel in the bus when I saw him, and walked up and told him to give it to you.)Please let me know if you got it or not. I would love to make you a custom plate if you so desire.
