CMA Awards

Post by Eddie Malray »

I've been sitting here on the Forum and watching the CMA awards. Boys I think Country Music was murdered on Music Row for sure. What I'm seeing and hearing makes me sick. Price and Haggard, where are you? I need you to flush the crap out of my ears. Eddie Malray

I didn't watch it, and for the first time didn't tape it.

Same for the CCMAs.

I am watching it now and I cant believe how many acts that are on the show that can not carry a tune. Your right good country music is going to the rockers that couldnt carry a tune in a 50 gallon steel drum. Its awful!! Even my wife who is tone deaf can tell!! Makes a real country fan just want to sit down and cry.

Shania Twain's opening number was hot. Lots of country instruments were right out front: banjo, fiddle, mandolin, guitar, and steel. They keyboard groove was solid. And the steel was featured very prominently, but I could hardly see him due to excessive camera motion.

Was that Bobby Trendy on fiddle?

Eddie, What did you think about Shania and her get up band? Looks like the same costumes and music she did for VH1 video. And at the Ryman. What a Shame Shame Shame. Makes me love the music we do even more. Price, HANK, Haggard etc. Nothing like TRADITIONAL COUNTRY.Let's go practice. CALGON TAKE me away. Sure did like that H-D Shania rode on stage. And as stated in another post Eddie Gossien w/ Daryl Worley was sounding good on that new Fessenden. And that paint scheme of the two Big Orange footballs and Vols across the front skirt sure was sharp.
[This message was edited by Kenny Foy on 06 November 2002 at 08:24 PM.]

Just 20 minutes into the show and two steel players have been featured nice and loud in the audio mix but they are hard to see. It sounded like a Franklin guitar with Lee Ann Womack, very nicely played but not visible except in silhouette.

Unfortunately in Alan Jackson's band, the accordion, banjo and fiddle played right thru the steel solo.

Who are all these steel players?

Country music murdered? Alan Jackson swept the awards tonight but left a few for Brad Paisley and one for Brooks & Dunn. Martina McBride won also. I didn't see anything but REAL country music winning tonight! Nickel Creek and Keith Urban was put on the show just to show us the difference between performers and JOKES! What a night for country music!

The guy playing for Lee Ann Womack, sounded a lot like Paul Franklin. But he looked more like Mike Johnson. It was a Franklin guitar.Mike plays a Franklin a lot these days. Was it him? Image

Randell Currie played for Brad P.He caught a bad break. No pun intended. Image Randell is one of the best young players out there.
[This message was edited by Bobby Boggs on 06 November 2002 at 10:59 PM.]

Dwayne Eddy can pick but that doesn't make him country. Sorry Bobby but I've seen Keith perform three times and failed to hear any country revelations. I guess if ZZ Topps guitars can be part of the Hall Of Fame, Keith can be called "country"! Which country should we call him?

Bobby, that was Rusty Danemeyer with Lee Ann Womack and he was playing one of his Zums. He has two of them, a grey and a green.

Thanks Kevin.I'll get my eyes checked tomorrow. Image It was a little dark though. That explains why it sounded so much like Paul Franklin.Rusty is a great player.

I was surprised that the guy who tried to sing and (played the mic stand) didn't get musician of the year. Image Congrats to Jerry Douglas.Wish it could have been Paul. But Jerry makes a nice 2nd choice for me.
[This message was edited by Bobby Boggs on 06 November 2002 at 10:32 PM.]

Just for the record, Duane Eddy is still around... and I for one don't care whether you call him rock, country, folk, pop... I just know I like it!
And on (what seems to have become) the topic... over the last few weeks my wife and I have been listening to some compilations of country and blues, all dating from pre-1950. She's constantly saying "that sounds like jazz to me", "that sounds like bluegrass to me"... seems like in the 20s/30s/40s the musicians, at least, didn't care too much about "classifying" the music - they just played what they liked.... Then again, I guess *real* musicians still do...

I'm not sure why Nickel Creek did not translate to TV last night. They are some fantastic musicians, and their first album was one of my most played last year (produced by Allison Krause). They are pretty young, just in their early twenties. I still haven't figured out how they got such a great bluegrass influence growing up in Orange County, CA. They are also fine people, very upfront about sharing their Christian beliefs, and have a great future in front of them.

They deserve a second listen...

I taped the show while at Bible class last night, but have watched over half of it by now. Chris Thile lived out one of my little pet paranoias--forgetting to brush my hair after I put the mousse in it (although mine ain't near long enough to get caught in the lighting system). I certainly don't have much to complain about from last night's show. I think the most ironic thing I noticed last night was them having AKUS sing and play along with a track while having "Musician of the Year" award-winner Jerry Douglas in their midst. That just ain't right. All in all, a good show. One more thing--I always assumed Vince Gill had better taste than to stoop to Toby Keith's level re: the "put a boot in your ***" comment. Welcome to the Naughty Aughties.

One more complaint--Rascal Flatts. These MTV rejects look disgraceful and sound even worse! (IMHO, of course)
[This message was edited by Jason Stillwell on 07 November 2002 at 08:35 AM.]

I was glad Bill Carlisle got in the Hall of Fame.Ironically one of his songs in the 30's "Maggie Get The Hammer, There"s A Fly On The Baby's Head" would probably get him charged with Child Abuse today. ED
