Highs vs. Lows

Post by Mark Kelchen »

I am playing a 1986 Zum D-10 8 & 5, equipt with George L T.W. pickups. Having a little trouble balancing the highs vs. lows. I am using the Hilton volume pedal and Boss RV-3 delay. When I switch back to a Shu-Bud pot pedal, everything turns to mud. Same with other pot pedals. The highs just seem a little too schrill, and when I get them dialed in, the lows seem to become a little muddy and indistinct. Of course everything changes playing out as opposed to at home. Could it be my pickups are a little too hot on the high end? Picking techniques? Improper adjustments? Any suggestions? :confused

You can try lowering the end of the pickup that picks up the high strings.

Mark, try reversing the wires at the Sho~Bud volume pedal, the sound should get a lot better...or a lot worse. Let me know what happens, and we'll go from there.
[This message was edited by Donny Hinson on 03 November 2002 at 11:33 AM.]

Mark,
There is a tone adjustment on your Hilton pedal; it may be under a plate, or, if it is a later model, exposed. You can turn this potentiometer to get somewhere in the ballpark. I suggest that you also turn the output volume down on the Hilton, also. Whilst I'm on the subject, adjust the Hilton so that there is a bit of volume even when the pedal is backed right off, you might find this improves tone.
