Info Needed

Post by Len Ryder »

Last night a group of us were discussing siblings of name entertainers who are trying to make it in the music business. One person said that Ray Price has a son who is trying, or has tried to follow his father as a singer. (Anyone trying to follow Ray would have a tough row to hoe even if they were a "super talent".) Anyone have any info ???????

Charlie Pride's son Carlton has a reggae band here in San Marcos, Texas that has a good following.

I remember back in the 70's seeing posters advertising upcoming performances by a young man who used the last name "Webb" with the words "Loretta Lynn's son" under the name. Evidently he wasn´t as successful as her sister...

Out on the road I sometimes run into Clint Black's brother, Kevin. Kevin is a really good singer but I don´t think he has aspirations of catching up with his brother fame-wise.

Isn´t John Micheal Montgomery's brother in the band "Montgomery Gentry"?

A couple more names that come to mind are Tommy Cash and LaCosta (sister of Tanya Tucker).

Billy Joe Burnette who did a stint with Fleetwood Mac and made a few waves in country a while back was the son of Dorsey Burnette. Joe Maphis and Rose Lee had a son named Jody who was the drummer for the Earl Scruggs Revue. Some Canadian entertainers of years ago (Hal Lone Pine & Betty Cody) had a son (Lenny Breau) who was one of the most awesome guitar players the world has ever seen. To bad he was murdered in his prime. Look at the Williams family. First ol' Hank, then his son Hank Jr., then his son Hank the 3rd and so on. Although he's not world famous, the Forum's own Carl West has a son (Larry) who I had the pleasure of working some with years ago. Larry's one of the best vocalists/drummers you've ever heard in your entire life, bar none! I think Chuck Wright of the old Wright Custom Steels has a son David who is one of the hottest things to ever touch a steel guitar. I remember seeing Tom T. Hall on the Opry years ago and he had his son playing lead guitar with him. In Bluegrass look at Don Reno. His three sons were great. One (Ronny) even used to play acoustic guitar with Merle Haggard. The other two played Banjo and Mandolin. Then there's Dale McCourey who's son Ronny (I think that's his name) wins the bluegrass music association's Mandolin Player of the year on a regular basis. His other son is a top notch 5-string player too. There's a lot more but as usual I'm having a senior moment.

The only thing Lorrie has "out done" her father George on is the number of marriages. Jody.

Did a gig a few years ago where I met Charlie Rich Jr., who was working with Freddie Fender and Augie Meyers. Looks just like his dad, and had some tapes of Charlie Sr. playing some awesome piano.

Re: Cliff Price..yes I've heard him at Muskogee last year in May. Hank Thompson and Ray Price were on the same show and Cliff opened for his Dad....did a couple of Haggard tunes and then introduced his father as "the greatest voice in music today"...he then stayed on stage and sang harmony on some tunes, and continued as a rythym player. How was he? Is that the question? Seemed like a nice kid..could we just leave it there?

For Michael Haselman: When Charlie Rich got out of the Navy, he lived on his dad's farm in West Memphis and helped him. He played with my band, THE ATOMICS, at the Navy Base here just outside Memphis on Fri. and Sat. nights. He played fine piano; did'nt sing very well only blues tunes, but later went commercial and made big bucks. Best, Hugh
