Denny Mathis

Post by Roger Rettig »

I'm just back from my gig at the Empire Theatre in San Antonio...

I had a wonderful time there, and thoroughly enjoyed doing the 'Always - Patsy Cline' show (again!!!)

I had to post here and pay tribute to the great Denny Mathis - he's an incredible steel-player and a real gentleman. I was lucky enough to spend a few hours at his home last week, where we sat at our guitars and swapped ideas (needless to say, this was mostly 'one-way traffic'!); I came away with many new thoughts, and the sure knowledge that I'd been privileged to be 'one-on-one' with one of the Masters of steel guitar.

I also got to play a little 'Telecaster' along with Kenny Grohman's lurid green push/pull on Sunday night - he, too, is a tremendous player!

All in all, I had a pretty good time in Texas......

You got to spend time with two of the best we have, Roger. They are both great guys and great pickers.

Did you check out that huge bar of Kenny's? It's hollow and sounds like it has steel balls washing around inside, in oil or something...

Hi, Emmett

Did you know that Denny plays with one of those, too?

Yes, I got to try it. It seems that whoever is selling these things claims that, once the steel player picks one up, the whole dance-floor starts to fill up! It sounds a bit like that famous Hans Christian Anderson tale to me but, come to think of it, there WERE a lot of people dancing at Denny's gig.....
