Buddy Cage on Brooklyn Cowboys tour?
The Brooklyn Cowboys are playing here in Portland tonight.
Anyone know if Buddy Cage is touring with them?
Thx,
Pete B.

We opened for them a week or so ago and Buddy was with them. Excellent band. Reminiscent of New Riders. Walter and Brian have some excellent songs and very good harmony and vocals. Good people.

Let me start off by saying that I am a big Buddy Cage fan. I saw him at the ISGC in ’97 (had a great seat!), tried to send money to help him buy a new guitar and he is one of the main reasons that I play a steel guitar today. Having said that I think you will be disappointed if you go to see the Brooklyn Cowboys expecting hear a lot of Buddy Cage. I saw him in Kalamazoo and I was surprised at how much of the time he sat out not playing anything. When he did play, quite a bit of the time he had his fuzz turned on which got lost in the sound of the rest of the band. Every so often he would whip off one of those great Buddy Cage runs that we all love. Not too many solos. I guess the highlight of the evening was when the Cowboys did Panama Red.
BTW Larry, you and the Tone Chaperones sounded great that night!

I was afraid to post my review but it is very similar to Jim's above.
I think they need to lose all the other soloists and just let Buddy wail!!!
Did you see that pic of Jerry G on the second page of that link I posted above?
I wrote the photographer, Robert Altman, asking him if he had any other pix of Jerry playing steel, and he replied within minutes:
Hi Peter:
Yes I believe I have some others of Jerry on pedal from a studio session with the New Riders of the Purple Sage. I leave for Paris
Thurs so this will take a while and be a labor of love. Right? No $$?
Best,
-Robert
PS- best to remind me in a few weeks.
Pretty cool! (if you're a Jerry fan
).
I wrote him back. I'll let you know how it turns out.
Anyway...
If you click on his name below the pix in that link above, it takes you to his website, which has a ton of great, great photos.
Lots of 60's/70's content!

Once again, it should be pointed out that Buddy does NOT see himself as a soloist, and does not consider steel to neccesarily be a lead instrument. He considers himself a sideman. He does not play instrumentals-which is why he rarely does the steel shows. He considers his work with the Cowboys, especially the new album, to be far superior to the NRPS stuff. He would think a band that featured too much more steel than what you get at the B Cows shows was boring. That the NRPS featured Cage so prominently was an accident born of having only one other soloist in the band. Cage is a team guy. I think that while thanking everyone for their enthusiasm, he would remind you that the whole is generally greater than the sum of it's parts-and that as a band, the Cowboys are VERY strong in talent, both with the instrument and the pen.
At least that's what he tells me when I bitch about not enough steel solos in the studio tracks!

It is well worth going to see these guys. They are absolute top notch musicians with tight harmonies and fantastic songs. This is NOT traditional country but more in line with the Burrito Bros, Byrds(Sweetheart era), etc., country rock. As the others stated, Buddy doesn't showboat at all but what he plays on 'Hearts on Fire' is worth the price of admission. Oh yeah, if you get there early, you can chat with Buddy and the band as much as you like,....super nice guys.

I forgot to ask Buddy how the NRPS reunion was.
I saw some pix on JB Arnolds link above.
I'm a huge Dave Torbert fan (one of the best voices ever for my taste), so I liked seeing that pic of Buddy Cage and Patti Torbert (I wonder if she is in the music biz at all?)
Great pix of those guys!
I wonder how they sounded and is there a copy of that set available? (or maybe the Sweetwater Reunion in '01)???
Buddy is playing that red Emmons LeGrande currently (4x5?).
He told me that going from his old axe to this one is like going from piloting the Space Shuttle to flying a Cessena!
I like the Brooklyn Cowboys and all, have their CD's, but man, with regard to Pedal Steel...the NRPS changed my life!!!
I don't seem to ever tire from listening to my fave NRPS CD's/records/tapes over and over again!

Regarding the High Times gig:
Moving on to something else: We played the Doobie Awards show and it was NUTS! Everybody at BB King's was into giving a new definition to the word STONED. The High Times folks were great to us and our guests and families. The ghetto/hip-hop security was irritating. Backstage was a comic relief composed of Hip-Hop daddies (recently released from Rikers) followed by vid.cam. bozos all trying to "capture the moment". Posing, mugging - it was hilarious. David Peel asking for my autograph - I thought he said "David Dio" (d-a-v-i-d-d-i-o).
That's Cage's take. I'm sure the set was great. Reunion talk is just that right now. Dawson is esconced in mexico, and doesn't particularly care for return trips to the states. It took some doing to get him to the High Times thing. Obviously, the money being right would have a great effect on everyone's attitude. But that's a problem-You'd have to fill some big rooms to generate the cash it would take to do that right-or to entice the participants there. That's kind of a wait-and-see deal.
