Who played steel on "Matilda" ? ? ?

Post by Roy Ayres »

One of my all time favorite steel rides ( and backup work) was on "Matilda" recorded by Dean Charles on the Discus label years ago. It was outstanding, in my opinion, and it was years and years ago. Does anyone know who that steel player was?

There are 2 steel players that come to mind and were in the Ft.worth/Dallas area about the time that was recorded, one was Julian Tharpe and the other was Jerry Stark... I will do some checking in the area and see what I can come up with. It was recorded in the D/FW area.

It was Julian Tharp (please excuse the mispelling). I worked with Dean around 85, and he told me Julian was a lot of fun.

Buddie & Ted:

Thanks. I've been wanting to know that for years. I lived in Dallas at the time, where someone told me it was some young kid. That steel work made me want to give up steel. I swore the guy must have had six fingers on his right hand. Is the guy still around? If so, I hope he hasn't improved; I couldnt stand it.

Well I checked my trusted sources and both agree it was Julian Tharpe. One of my sources was in the studio when it was cut.
Thanks,

David:

I'm at work at the moment. Watch this thread. I'll look at the flip side of "Matilda" when I get home about 6:30 EDST and let you know.

What ever happened to Dean? I used to play with him after hours at the Country Inn in Ft. Worth. I didn't play steel at the time. I just played guitar and harmony work. I really don't remember much about it, after all, it was after 2:00AM when we would go over and jam all night. Whew! Those were the days.

Chris, Dean is in Ft Worth. I talked to him about 3 weeks ago. He does some traveling. He has a CD release. I assume that you can get a copy of it at the ET shop in Ft Worth.
