Michelin Tire Commercial

Post by David Mason »

Does anyone know who it is that is playing steel on the Michelin tire commercial? Is it a pre-exiting sound bite or specially recorded for the commercial?

Could be me, I added steel to a Michelin spot almost a month ago in Michigan.
Is the commercial shot in the grand canyon, with a swingin' rockabilly soundtrack?

The producer at the session had a canned steel lick they wanted me to replicate, plus they wanted ad lib licks.

Without hearing the commercial I can't say if it's me or some canned steel licks, or a combination.

cheers,

Drew,

Great work. That one got my attention several times yesterday. I was resting up from the convention and was only awake during that commercial. Image

Thank you for the nice comments, guys!

Dan, I played my black Fessy SD-10. I'm still more comfortable with that guitar than the red D-10. If I had the bucks I would send the black one to Jerry and tell him to put the back neck on it.

thanks again,

What a breath of fresh air, when I heard the Michelin tire commercial.

It seems that every other commercial on television, especially the new car commercials, has some tasteless (is there any other kind?) drummer, beating the "holy crap" out of a drum.

I've heard two different versions of the commercial. Both in the canyon, but one has a lot of reverb on the steel...the other has different licks, and less reverb. Image

Donny,

I did two versions of the commercial, a 27 second version and a 30 second. Both have basically the same licks, the 30 second spot has a vamp at the end.

Again, thanks for the compliments, guys!!

I heard it a few weeks ago.
A Fessy, huh? Great tone! I almost
thought it was a vintage steel.
Sure fooled me!

Heard it today, very impressed. Surprised that an ad agency would pick up-front steel for a tire commercial. And how does site-seeing tie into pedal steel? Oh well, sounded great!

Don't watch much TV, but have been trying to find the commercial-Finally heard it during the NASCAR race Sat. night! Also, at the very end of another ad, they played a bar or so of SG Rag! Don't even know what product that was about? Did anyof you catch that and/or know the player was? You did a great job on the Michilin ad, hope to hear lots more of your music!

Tony,

I don't know who wrote the music or how it was chosen. I'm assuming the producer had a hand in writing the music bed. The rhythm tracks sound canned.

Dan,

Jerry e-mailed me and wanted to know what pick-up was in my Fessy! It's an E-66, which came with the guitar. I have a George L 710 that I switch out now and then for varietie's sake. I mic'ed a Nashville 400 for the session.

Thanks, guys.
