Jim Cohen at Scotty's

Post by Ron Page »

I apologize if someone else already mentioned this.

Jim did a great set just before Smiley. It’s great to see Scotty giving the stage to some of the lesser known players. Like Smiley, Jim chose some tunes that no one else played. The two that I recall are “Someday Soon” and “Surfer Girl”. They really sounded great played on steel.

We also learned that Jim is a former steel guitar student of Scotty’s. I thought that was cool – full-circle.

Congratulations Jim.

I wasn't there, but had Steel.Radio on
I was waiting all day to hear Jim play, then that guy was interviewing everybody on Steel.Radio and I couldn't hear it.

He did that on a lot of sets. Here we are trying to hear the Artists play and he's gabbing.

Of course you guys that were there heard it all.....al

Many of the crowd had not made it to the auditorium in time for Jim's set. I had a great seat for it and it was wonderful. I really enjoy what he is doing and his recording, Finally Here, is great.

Very nice to get to hear him play live.

Jim Cohen and Smiley Roberts did themselves proud at the St. Louis Show. Great tone, great selection of tunes, and great picking. Lets all give Jim and Smiley a big round of applause for doing a great gig. Jody.

Jimbeaux is one of my favorite people as well as one of my favorite players. He played a version of "Different Drum" for a small group of us out by the Fessenden booth that had me in goosebumps and drew applause from some heavy players. He has a sense of melody and phrasing that I totally envy.

This "master of acceptable tone" thing is a joke that should be put to rest, IMHO. This cat is a great musician, period.

Al, that's too bad. I would feed that back to Michael Scott who runs the web stuff for Scotty. It seems to me that there is ample time between sets to do the interviews, even if necessary continuing an interview over a couple of the breaks. Having said that, Jim hit the stage pretty much ready to play -- no tuning and screwing with the gear.

I think they'll improve that just like they do everything else with this great event they deliver for us every year.

Thanks, guys! Ron, it was great to meet you at last and thanks for your nice remarks. Al, thanks for tuning in and trying to catch my set. I appreciate the effort and sorry it didn't work out. David, your comment reminds me of an old Victor Borge line. As he sat down to play for a half-filled concert hall in Cleveland, he leaned into the mike and said, "I see Cleveland is a very wealthy town: each of you has purchased TWO seats for tonight's show!"

Jody and Frank, thanks for your support, guys. I look forward to returning to Dallas and Grand Rapids in the spring.

And Herbster, what can I say? You da man! Had a ball with ya. Didn't know you were listening when I played "Different Drum" till it was over. That's a good thing, since you were a member of the Stone Ponies!

Enough rambling; I better go work on my Joe Wright exercises (kinda like Kegel's but you don't pick up as many coins).

Listening to a Messianic broadcast on the radio the host brought up the name Cohen, and said it was a direct descendent of King David himself, he's the guy who said make a pleasing sound on an instrument of ten strings and play skillfully, can't beat that!

I had the pleasure of meeting Jim in Phoenix last year at the airport and spent some time with him and took delivery of Tommy White's "Hot Licks Video" P/P and got Jim's CD "Finally Here" which is a wonderful treat and Jim is a very talented, nice guy to know with a style of his own, thanks, Gary.
