Gene Jones Music

Post by John P. Phillips »

I've got a comment or two about the cuts that Gene has on his website. Jody was right on with his other thread. These are some of the best songs that I've heard in quite some time. You owe it to yourself to give them a listen. This guy's history in music puts most of us to shame. I was especially Knocked for a loop with Gene's version of "Nightlife". You automatically say to yourself, Well, here's another Emmons cover for sure. But I must say, I didn't hear the first so-called "EMMONS" lick in the whole song. What Gene has done with it, is to take the advice of so many that I've heard, "Don't copy someone else, Do it your way". Now I mean no dis-respect to the "BIG E" whatsoever but it is refreshing to hear this song done in other than the usual style. Gene has taken this classic to another level. He has truly made this version HIS OWN. I can't praise it highly enough. "Midnight in Old Amarillo " is another of my favorites Good, clean sound that anybody would be proud of. Misty, Moonglow, and Don't Get Around Much Anymore are also favorites of mine.
You owe it to yourself to go to www.genejones.com And give this music a listen. I think you'll be glad you did !!
That's my 2 pennies worth and I just had to say it !! Image

After my web-site server notified me of an unusual surge of 1485 HITS in a 24 hour period, I started looking for an explanation and found this post by John P. Phillips that must be responsible for it.

John, you have said some of the kindest things that a musician could ever hope to have said about his playing....and I thank you most sincerely for it, and be assured that even though I will most certainly be accused of immodesty, I have made sufficient copies to insure that all my friends and relatives will have ample opportunity to read it. Image

Having said that, I would add that the most humbling thing of your post is to be even mentioned in the same paragraph with my idol Buddy Emmons.....the worlds undisputedly greatest steel-guitar player...the inspiration who sent this die-hard non-pedal purist out to buy a pedal steel the same day he first heard on the juke box at the club where I was working, the greatest, most impressive playing that I would have thought impossible to accomplish on a steel-guitar.....the steel guitarist and the song that redirected my entire focus of playing....the steel CLASSIC for all time...Buddy Emmons and Nightlife. I was never able to play it with the feeling that Buddy so easily accomplished, so I long ago settled for just hacking through it.

John, you didn't get any followups on your post but be assured that you caused a lot of curiosity and sent a lot of people to my website to check it out...as evidenced by the 1485 Hits in a 24 hour period.....a record for my site! Thank you again John for your generosity and for saying the things you said.

Respectfully and humbly,

Gene Jones

Yet again, I am made to feel underprivileged, if not downright inferior Image, due to the lack of sound on my computer Image
Hope you soon have the time to get this CD out, Gene (maybe thru b0b and the Forum?)
Meantime, glad all the rest of you are enjoying!!! Image Image
