Great post. I just had the "Franklin Drop" added to my Carter a few weeks ago. It sounds real nice alternating it with an open grip and then an AB grip. I've been trying to figure out exactly what it does musically - that is, the open grip is either the I or the V; and the the AB is the IV or I, respectively: E and A in the open position. With the "P4" activated, the open strings 10-8-6 become A-E-F# (F#m7 without the 5th; A6 without the third; Esus2sus4?). Strings 8-6-5 and 6-5-4 become inversions of the same triad. How does this relate to the I and the V or the IV and the I? Also, could anyone post some tab on some familure "licks"?

Thanks a lot. Ian

Are you looking for that particular string combination? I don't know that I've heard him
engage 5, 6, and 10 simultaneously.

Other songs with the 5 & 6 drop include:

"Rope the Moon" (John Michael Montgomery) on the outtro.

"There Goes" (Alan Jackson) on the fill following the ride.

"Love of My Life" (Sammy Kershaw) on the ride twice.

"I'll Try" (Alan Jackson) on a verse fill. It's an ear-catcher which makes the recording.

It's a fun change. I still miss it.

I use that change quiet a bit. But I have the 5th string and the 6th string pull on separate pedals. I've found some nice 7th effects with it. Hit your 2nd string with your 5th string and press the A pedal and let go and then (while the strings are ringing) press the pedal that lowers the 5th string a full tone. If you were in D (10th frett), this would be an A chord.

Mike Johnson plays some nice licks/runs with this change and Tommy White also. Tommy's
changes are on 2 knee levers. I've got a Doug
Jernigan "Sky High Steel"lp that he uses the
5th string B to A on "Amazing Grace" during the second solo that will make your hair stand on your neck!! Some pretty moves with these changes,I think anyway.
