Lloyd Green: Shades of Steel
I got this album about a year ago and it;s great!
I would like to know when it was recorded and which guitar Lloyd used on it. I read on the Forum that the sinle I Can See Clearly Now reached #36 on Billboard on april 14 1973, so I conclude that the album was recorded between januari and march 1973 and that the guitar must have been Lloyd's converted Baldwin guitar.
Am I correct?

Hi Marco and the rest of The Forum.
I just spoke with Lloyd on the phone and asked him this very question for you.
Here was Lloyd's response,
The Album "Shades Of Steel" was started in the middle of 1972 and was completed in late 1972, but was not released until 1973.
The Single "I can see clearly now" was released before the LP was. It was the 1st single off the album.
I took possession of the LDG Sho-Bud on May 9th 1973 and the Album cover was shot about a month later sometime in June of 1973.
Too Conclude, yes it was the Baldwin Sho-Bud on the "Shades Of Steel" LP, but the Photo on the album cover was of my new LDG Sho-Bud when it was a month old.

I believe that this is Lloyd's best album and also one of the "top ten" steel guitar albums of all time-Lloyd's choice of recording several contemporary pop/rock tunes of the day "I Can See Clearly Now","Morning Has Broken", "Here Comes The Sun", "Dannys Song", and "Killing Me Softly" are recognizable songs to many younger folks-some of which as friends of mine at that time-were first introduced to the beautiful sound of pedal steel guitar playing songs that they would know and appreciate

Yes. Ten Shades. More country music, sparser, more listenable production, and killer phrasing.
My favorite Ten Shades moment is on "Secret Love." As Pig takes the melody, Lloyd roars in after two bars with the biggest, crunchiest fill ever. Man, for me, that is literally a holler out loud moment. "Yeah!"
