Big Bud?
I stumbled across a 1972 album by a California band called Honk (it's the soundtrack for a surfing film, Five Summer Stories.)
One one track -- "High in the Middle" -- there is some terrific steel guitar that is credited only to "Big Bud."
Does anyone know who that might have been? Buddy Cage? Buddy Emmons? Or a lesser known -- but talented -- Bud?

Calling Jason Odd....
When Jason sees your post, and he will, I'm certain he'll be able to tell you all you want to know about the group, the player and the SoCal milieu. How he manages to do this from down under, I've never understood, but he does.
Uhh, BTW, are you the Russ Young that plays with that group Poco, or are you a lesser known -- but talented -- Russ Young?
[This message was edited by Mark Tomeo on 23 May 2002 at 08:19 AM.]

I can assure you that I am a lesser known -- and much less talented -- Russ Young.
To see what that other Russ Young (better known as "Rusty," although his first name is Norman) is up to, go to: http://www.angelfire.com/music4/rustyyoung/index.html

Jason Odd referred me to Will Brady, who played guitar for Honk during the 70s.
Will revealed the identity of "Big Bud":
"Yo Russ...'Big Bud' was actually Red Rhodes, who had a renowned repair shop on La Cieniga in Hollywood. He also played on a couple cuts on the next Honk album (referred to as the "clay figure album").
"Honk opened for Poco once in Long Beach. Rusty Young was great. "
So much for my theory that Buddy Cage was "Big Bud!"

Well done Russ, and thanks for the email as well.
I guess when it comes to Los Angeles and the steel guitar in the studio, it's really the big core of Rusty Young, Sneaky Pete Kleinow, Red Rhodes, Jay Dee Maness and Buddy Emmons between 1968-1974.
Soon after that Buddy split, while the others started doing less sessions while Jay Dee seemed to get more, not to mention a whole new steel crowd coming up from that scene. (Dan Dugmore, etc).
