Joe Wright

Post by Malcolm McMaster »

I have just been at the British Steel Festival, run by Gerry Hogan in Newbury England. The main act was Joe Wright WOW! .Where have you guys over there been hiding him. Most of us over here did not know him,but this guy took the show by storm. His fantastic blend of talents were impresive. Not only could this guy pick with the best, and I do mean the best, but he sang while doing it,delivering some of his own material and standards, blended with his own unique brand of humour. This guy deserves to be up there with the "Big Names", so if you get the chance go see him.I know he is not doing many gigs just now due to his family circmstances with his mother's illness , so if you do see his name go see him.Joe if you read this just to let you know that you are in our thoughts and that you touched evryone over here with your music Malcolm McMaster touched everucis

Don't worry; we're not hiding him. We tried that and it didn't stick. Joe is "The Twisted Genius of Steel Guitar", and he already IS up there with the big names; he's a favorite at all the steel shows.

Man you are so right about Wright! I got to meet him and catch his set at the Dallas convention this year. What a great picker. Also got to see him and David Wright jam in the Sierra room. That was one of the many highs for me at the show.

Believe me Joe Wright is well known amongst convention goers. He is a monster player! Great combination of taste, touch, and tone, and he is always ready to help a beginner player. I am a Joe Wright fan.

Joe takes an audience to places they need to go. He punishes them with blinding rock distortion then calms them with a 4/4 suffle.
Joe is truely a STEEL GUITAR genius that's OFFICIALLY OFF the HAY BALE

Joe is one of the greatest players of the steel ever as far as I'm concerned. I think his comprehensive approach to teaching steel as a real musical instrument has done more for the instrument than just about anything. His technigue system alone has helped to bring us out of the dark ages.

All of the above!!!

Joe, IMHO, defies logic! He literally blows my mind. I almost bust a gut when he is performing. He has a humor that is like NO other on this earth.

God bless Joe, and all of you,

Hi Malcolm! Haven't seen you since the summer.

Joe Wright is a BIG influence in my playing.

I'm surprized he's a new item to you.
I last saw Joe at LT Zinn's show in Michigan, April 2002.

He's been on the main stage at the ISGC for many years. He has great instructional material too.

I've been trying to work out his wonderful arrangement of "House of the Rising Sun" for quite some time now.

Did Theoawfulest also perform at the Newbury show?

his performance on Sunday at Newbury was really something. He came across as so relaxed - picking out brilliant sounds while pulling a face at someone in the audience.
His range of improvisation was stunning.
Now I know what my Sierra Session Keyless U12 is capable of in the 'Wright' hands Image

Joe Wright is a talanted pedal steel player to say the least. What really blows me away is, he looks up and snarls and sometimes even has his eyes closed while playing. Ya gotta love it!

Joe is a real nice person, at the Chattanooga show I was waiting for a table at the buffet, and Joe came in, we started chatting to pass the time. Another non famous steeler got a table, and asked Joe to join him, Joe came over and asked me to join them as well... go figure must be just a nice guy. To cap it off Hal Rugg cmae over and asked if he could join us. Imagine me sitting sharing a meal with two of the greatest players on earth. God blessed me that day.

I went to the Newbury festival over the weekend and IMHO,had it not been for Joe i would have been very dissapointed, I think Jerry Hogan does a fantastic job every year but i think some fresh faces on stage would be a breath of fresh air.GOD BLESS JIM.

I am certainly happy to be able to consider Joe a friend of mine and I doubt that he has a bigger fan than me. I have stated on this Forum several times before that in my opinion there is not a better steel guitar player/entertainer alive than Joe Wright. He can be gazing into the audience and play stuff that most accomplished players would have to concentrate on the guitar to play.
You can get so involved in watching his antics that sometimes you might overlook how great he is playing. Another amazing thing to me is he is a GREAT singer. He can sing any type of song and is terrific on a ballad.
I am always in awe of Joe any time he performs and he is just a great down to earth guy to boot!! I sure like ole Joe!!

Joe and I have been friends for a number of years now, having worked together with Sierra as well as in steel shows. I was first off empressed when I walked on stage to tell him something while he was playing some hot breakdown and without blinking or a hesitation in his playing, started a conversation with me! I recognized his talent then, but over the years have always become more impressed with Joe as a person as well as a musical machine. Joe is a good friend and great supporter of the steel guitar and its use in all music.
