Charleton/Reverb Unit

Post by George King »

I'm just a little too young to remember the days of Rhodes and Charleton live, but I'v always picked up everything I could find they played on.Being a steelplayer myself I've always admired Charletons tone in those days. Many of you guys probably have seen pictures from those days, some good pictures I,ve seen are in the Bear Family E.T. CD sets that are now avialable, included in the booklet. My question for any of you guys who've either seen the pictures or remember those days is what is the small box in the floor in front of Charleton. It looks like his guitar cord goes into it,I thought mabey it was a reverb unit of some kind. His amp usualy wasn't shown in the pictures ,and I just thought mabey he ran his guitar through this unit then into a PA or something. Can anybody tell me what it is .If it is a reverb unit what kind was it.Thanks George

George,
to my knowledge this unit was the Standel "Reverbalux" , the amp must have been the all-tube Standel 80L15.

Another small sqaurish black or grey box Buddy and Leon used was an "echplex". A tape delay, usually set to one good solid repeat, about half as loud as the picked note. Then a little reverb from the amp, really makes thick tone.

In the early 60s before the amp builders were putting reverb in their amps, some of the players were using a box that had the Hammond spring unit in it and put it between the guitar and the amp.

I don't know about all the amps Buddy Charleton used back in the day but I do know he regularly played through a Standel solid state amp called "The Custom Super XV" The amp has reverb built in.

Maybe he will see this post and let us know.

Standel also made an echo unit called a "Modulux". They were the first solid state echo box I ever saw. They had a thing inside that looked like a can of tuna.

Jerry.....

Someone told me (many years ago)that it was actually oil in that can. He give an explenation about it but I am havin' a serious senior moment right now and wouldn't wish to repeat something that I cain't verify.

I guess I've never seen an older picture of Buddy with the Troubadours with his amp.He told me once that one of his early amps was a tube sho bud amp designed by Evans. Is this the Compactra model sho bud or was there another tube sho bud that I dont know about?George
