Post by Bill Simmons »

I have a couple of questions for both these wonderful players. If anyone knows how I can contact them I would appreciate it. By the way, they both were excellent at the convention and both played beautiful Zums.(Pardon my mispelling of their names) Bill Simmons, Keller, TX

Bill, I have to agree with you on both Bert and Tommy. They are excellant musicians but beyond that they challenge themsleves on the instrument with great song selection and execution. Tommy played a flawless set and some great unusal selections on the steel. Bert also played a couple of unusual selections. I love to see a musician step out of the box. Not to step on any toes or hopefully not get flamed but Hal Rugg, Herby Wallace and Tom Brumley play the same songs at every show year after year. All three of these fellows are musicans extraordinare and are some of my favorities......but they need to add some new material. Buck Grantham is another one of my favorites. His tone is incredible and he plays some neat selections.

I agree with you Jim...Tommy D.in particular played a very refreshing selection of songs, especially 'Yesterday' and 'Dance With Me'. I enjoyed everyone sooo much! However, several attendees mentioned the same thing that after awile, everyone started to sound alike in that it was a lot of the 4/4 bass (which I love) and swing/jazz feel. Tommy's high energy and smile when he played 'Dance With Me' was super. It was a very nice change up of songs.

Also, I loved Junior Knight's set. His tone was a sweet, Lloyd Green feel and touch in my opinion. Again, all the players were so talented and I loved the entire TSGC weekend. This is my first since moving from Seattle to Ft. Worth 7 months ago. Texas is blessed with many talented players.

Anyone notice the "freshness" of Buzz Evans, Chuck Lettes, Denny Mathis, Herb Steiner, and Bert Rivera(his "Godfather" medley was stupendous!!)?

Bill & Jim,

Thank you both for your kind words about my portion of the great show in Dallas. The TSGA organization always has fantastic players on stage to support your efforts and makes the time on stage even more enjoyable. All you have to do is "lay in the groove" and play what you feel! (With guys like Roy Rosetta, Paul Polish, Rich Obrien, Ronnie Ray, Jenee Keener, & Mac Mcrae you gotta feel that groove!)

I especially appreciate your kind comments about my song selections. I'm one of those die-hard country traditionalists who loves laying steel guitar behind ballads and shuffles, but, I feel like our beloved instrument has no boundaries. I don't always pull it off, but I'm not afraid to try. And the acceptance sometimes is surprising and rewarding. (I recently recorded with a group of young, Black females that was doing what sounded like Rap/Gospel to me. They flipped out over what the steel guitar added to their songs.)

Anyway, thanks again for your support. And a very special thanks to the TSGA, Charlie Norris, and Wayne Smith for the opportunity to come to Dallas and play on the show. I feel very fortunate, indeed.

Bert doesn't post on the Forum so I feel obligated to intercede for him......he is an inovative player...way back in 64 he played commercial pedals before it was popular in addition to the great C6th that he plays on the shows. Bert is one of the great players......www.genejones.com
