I don't know what player they recommend, but I use Winamp. Winamp is a free download.
In Winamp, go to "Play URL" and type or paste this:

There were a lot of dropouts and buffering this weekend on Steel Radio, even on a high speed cable link.
Don't know if it's the server they use or the bandwidth of the server links.
One thing that doesn't seem right is it was announced that 1 million, at one point, were logged on to Steel Radio. I would have to challenge that. It may be 1 million were logged on to the server, which has other "radio" sites but not just to the Steel Radio.

I use Media Player Classic with the advanced K-Lite Codec pack to listen to .pl (playlist) files.

I'm with you, Jack. I don't know what they're using to determine those listener figures but they seem way out of whack. Last year, I believe they claimed +400K and I don't buy that one either.
Also, with all the buffering going on, I'd bet lots of folks hit the servers multiple times each just to get a stable stream. That would be several hits in server logs per user, but it's not the same as unique listeners.

Reluctantly, I posted some Arbitron listener figures over in the SteelRadio forum for comparison. I say "reluctantly" because I truly don't mean to criticize what they do. It's a great service to our community. But I think they've been given some bogus info by some techie folks who should know better.
There is a lot of jargon and lots of numbers being thrown around but, viewed in isolation, they're useless without proper interpretation.

One issue that affected the broadcast is that the server is apparently in the NYC area and they were having weather related issues. However, any decent server site, especially one that is selling time on their servers, would have better reliability and have emergency power and communications "pipes" (lines) that are on alternate paths to avoid service interruptions. Some even have a "hot site" backup site that they can bring on line if needed because of whatever problems at the main server site.
