Ok, so I'm basically thick. The only way I get something (like a lick or a whole song) is by playing it over and over again.
I suggest that following the tab and the tune at the same time could be made easier if this proposed method existed...
Initiate playback of recording (i.e. "Bars of Steel" by Lloyd Green from Scotty's book.
Play according to the tab for as far I can remember & learn new, this trip thru the track, and then stop the playback.
Start the playback again at the beginning & follow it, perhaps a little farther.
If learning is happening, eventually I'll get to the end of the tune.
The playback system is the key. Having to push buttons and manage a keyboard or bank of handswithces, with finger pick on, is A PAIN. (The Teac's keypad is all scratched now...)
Now, my proposal is to play the track back with the PC, using software having the functionality of Transcriber (or equivalent) that allows you select the block inside the tune and repeat it.
What's needed is the functionility to make the tail of the block extend (as in "occur later")each time.
The input sensor for stop, replay, (maybe manual extend) could be either a footswitch pad, or, wildly, a headband with tilt sensors. Lean head forward to start, to the left to stop & rewind, and to the right to extend the tail.
One could practice until they either learned the tune or got a headache...
If anyone knows of an existing method that does this, please let me know. (perhaps headache free?)
What I want...

Ray, if I'm reading your requirement correctly, what you want is to be able to easily mark a new start point, and a new end point, within a file, which will then be repeated for the purpose of listening/learning the material.
If that's what you want, there's a lot of portable devices that have the ability to mark an "A" position and a "B" position, and repeat that portion. They don't require a PC - they function as stand-alone devices, but playback can be into whatever system you want to use. I own two such devices, but, there's a lot of 'em out there.
The difficulty with the finger picks isn't resolved, unfortunately. With the miniaturization in all these devices, it's going to be an on-going struggle to be able to manipulate the buttons picks on. Only work-around I can see is to use the bar hand.
[This message was edited by Dave Potter on 22 July 2006 at 03:52 PM.]
