Removable Storage Device Problem?

Post by Michael Dene »

Everytime I connect my camera to the USB port on my computer it identifies it as Drive E ... well that's what it used to do !

Now it is sequentially moving through the alphabet each time I connect it, ie drive F, Drive G ... I'm up to Drive N. I am figuring there is probably an upper limit to the number of possible names for this Drive so there must be someway to tell it what name to call it, before I run out of letters!!

ps The camera operates normally on anothet computer.

Help!!

thanks in advance

Michael

You must use the Eject Hardware icon in the system tray to deactivated the new "drive" before "ejecting" it from the USB port. This relinquishes the assigned drive letter back to the system. If you always use the eject hardware dialog before removing plug-in devices they will always be assigned the same drive letter. This is an XP drive caching issue.

The actual language used in the Eject Wizard is to STOP the device. You will see it listed in the tree display of connected drives, you will Stop it, then you will be given a "it is now safe to remove this device" notice.

One way to stop the device is to find the little icon (for the device) that appears in the lower right hand section of the screen on the task bar, right click on the icon, and follow the selections...
(That's what I do for my USB thumb drive.)

When I connect my Canon digital camera to the computer via USB, it identifies it as a camera, not a drive. This has been the case from start. I run Win XP Pro SP2 with all updates. Maybe I'm missing something and I have my software installed incorrectly. Help!!!!!!!!!!!

Wiz,

I always use the 'safely remove hardware" button and always wait until it says it is safe to do so.

Is there any way to over-ride or reset this?
