javascript help

I downloaded the free version of AVG and now I cant open javascript files. Can anyone tell me how to corect this?

Wade;
Please describe how you are trying to "open" these Javascript files, and what, if any message you are getting from AVG that indicates that is is blocking scripts from running.

I use AVG Free and have no problem running .js files while testing websites I write. I cannot find any mention of Javascript in the AVG documentation, or in the online FAQs. However, when I test a web page in Internet Explorer it displays a yellow bar over the viewport that I must click on to allow the "Active Scripting" to execute. That is an Internet Explorer security feature, not an AVG issue.

Wiz;
When I get to a website that has a link that opens with javascript when I click on it it does nothing. They would open before I installed the AVG program so I thought it must be this program.

What's AVG?

Javascript is necessary on most commercial web sites these days. Now that the so-called "Web 2.0" technologies are taking off, it's becoming the one common denominator that web developers can count on. If your browser isn't reacting properly to Javascript, it's seriously broken.

Will JS work after removing AVG?

Unless you have the trial version of AVG Plus, with it's associated software firewall, and have allowed the option to disable Javascript in web pages, thus breaking 75% of them, the AVG anti virus program has no function to block Javascript, itself.

Typically, this is done by firewalls, under the guise of increasing your security. Blocking Javascript in firewalls started with AtGuard, which begat Tiny Personal Firewall, which begat Kerio Personal Firewall, which begat the Sunbelt Personal Firewall.

As a side-development, AtGuard's technology was gobbled up by Symantec and became the basis for the Norton Personal Firewall. Norton Internet Security blocks everything they can think of (by default).

The ZoneAlarm Personal Firewall also blocks Javascript, if you don't uncheck that option, in the configuration screen.

Aside from that, if you are using Firefox you may have installed an extension that blocks Javascript, or actually turned off Javascript support under Tools > Options > General > Javascript. Internet Explorer calls Javascript "Active Scripting" and has advanced options to disable it. This is the default action for any website in the Restricted Sites Zone.
