Losing Internet Connection?

Post by Roger Shackelton »

I have a dial-up connection to the internet. Sometimes I lose the connection.
Is there any way to prevent this?

There are so many factors that can cause a disconnect. The ISP's modem, the Telco line, the internal "house" wiring, the RJ-11 telco cable, the modem, a voice telephone in the house (especially a cordless phone), etc.

In other words, there's no one thing that causes this. Except, if you have AOL.

When I had dial-up I was losing the connection constantly. This was with a new computer. My phone wire was a real short run out the the telephone company's box, so I replaced the wire. Still kept getting hang-ups all the time. Sometimes every monute making it impossible. I always suspected the provider.

I am on DSL right now and the price has been getting cheaper everly year (as long as you pester the phone company every year to sign up for a new promotion - otherwise they up the rate) $17 a month for me for DSL going on my third year.

Believe it or not DSL isn't available in my neighborhood. My only option is Comcast cable, which is about twice as expensive as DSL.

Would unplugging my cordless phone help?

Would not hurt to unplug the cordless phone. Anything to eliminate potential noise or interference on your in-house line. When I was having problems, seemed some days worked fairly well -- other days no luck.

Hope it helps.
