50 is about average for a WinXP, SP2 machine with firewall, antivirus, etc running.

There may be a few that doesn't need to be running but with Windows XP, "system resources" are not an issue like they were in the older Windows Operating Systems. XP, although a "memory hog", handles memory much better and more efficiently and the reason there is no longer a "system resources free" listing.

There's some startup/cleanup that you can do but it won't make a really visible difference. e.g. many programs want to put a "quick start" in the Sys Tray (lower right of the task bar) and most of that is not really needed. e.g. media players, games, adobe acrobat, etc.

You can Google for hits on windows+xp+startup+services or go to Mark Russinovich's website at www.sysinternals.com and read about processes and threads on this page, and on his blog.
