How do I stop Pop Ups????

Post by Walter Hamlin »

I have Windows XP and I have it set at do not allow any popups but I get them anyway. Several at a time, such as Cascade,Tile Horizontally, Tile Vertically and there is more. I did not use to get this stuff. What do I need to do to stop this mess.
Thanks,
Walter

Use Firefox or Opera browser,- reduces popups to an absolute minimum.

Thanks, I am trying some of the ideas given. The firewall is on. I am thinking of going with Mozilla and see if it works. I have used Adware and other programs to see if it will help. Nothing doing. Oh yea, when I use Adware, it tells me that the SGForum is a critical issue and I need to quarantine it. What's this about??

My solution was just to stop visiting sites that have pop-ups. I've heard all the arguments about pop-ups helping starving people with big websites finance them, but the basic idea of it still abhors me. It's like needing to have your house painted, but instead you just let the neighborhood kids "grafitti squad" do their thing on it because you're too cheap to buy a few 5 gallon buckets of paint. Walter, go to "control panel/windows firewall/advanced". See if your internet connection is listed and checked.

Also install Windows Service Pack 2, if you haven't already. You can get a CD from Microsoft, for about $2. If you have a fast Internet connection, you can download it. (It's about a 40 meg download, I think).

It adds a built in pop-up blocker, among other security improvements.

If you don't want to do that, the Google toolbar should help.
