In order to user your PC as a "server" for a web site, it must (should) be operational all the time and connected to the web. In addition to the software required to run a web server you will need server security software. Hosting a web site on your Personal PC is not what you really want to do.

Web sites are normally hosted by sites that specialize in web site hosting. Most ISP's will provide a small server space (free) for use by their subscribers for a personal web site. I'm using my personal web site that RoadRunner provides to also host the Florida Steel Guitar Club's web site, but I am limited to what I can post because of the maximum space allowed for a web site.

Your best bet is to use a commercial web hosting site. There are some free ones, but many of those dump a lot of advertising on to the free web sites or have "bandwidth" limitations (only so many accesses per month). There are commercial web sites that will provide more than enough space to house a web site with pictures, etc for a small monthly cost (many under $10 per month) and many of these, if you sign up and pay for a year in advance, will even provide a free "dot com" web addresss. Most of the pay sites also come with e-mail support.

Sam,

Jack is right. I have my web site hosted by Network Solutions for just a few bucks per month. To see an example, check out my site by clicking here.

Their web site is http://www.networksolutions.com

When their page comes up, click on "How can we help you" then click on the option to "Design a web site". They will ask you to answer a few questions, then will suggest some designs. It costs nothing until you give them a credit card number or submit payment.

Samuel;
Find out if your ISP provides you with free web space and learn how to upload files to it, then how to link to them. Then buy a good book to teach your self HTML 4.1 and CSS stylesheets. Howard Sams sells teach yourself in 7 days books on web coding.

A lot of us professional Webmasters started by making our first sites on free web space supplied by our ISP, and a how-to book. Now, we rent commercial hosting space and use advanced tools to design web pages and shopping carts, etc.
