Desktop

Post by jolynyk »

I am running a Pentium III, Windows XP Pro, 512 ram.. Several days ago I got infected with some spy ware.. one of which was Spy Sherriff, & also a Trojan..I bought & ran Spy Sweeper, & installed Norton 6.. , then I ran Adaware & Spybot.. My computer is back to nomal, Except, when I right click on an empty spot on my dsktop, go to Properties, Desktop, then try to move the bar on the right side,or click on the top or bottom arrows, so I can pick a picture for my Desktop, it is dead.. I try to click on one of the backgrounds, & nothing happens.. All the other settings work OK.. Screen saver, Appearance, settings etc. are fine..
Yet I have a folder on my desktop that I've saved a bunch of pictures in, & I can open that folder & right click on any picture, & set it as a desktop background..
any help will b appreciated..

jolynyk;
Explorer.exe may have been corrupted by your Trojan. It may be backed up in your system restore folder as well. If you have not already turned off System Restore, do so now.

Start > My Computer - right-click on My Computer > select Properties > click on the System Restore tab > check "Turn Off System Restore" > click Apply > click OK.

Now, use the System File Checker utility to confirm if any system files need to be restored. Have your Windows CD ready, then go to Start > Run and type in CMD. A DOS-like Command window will open. At the command prompt type: SFC /SCANNOW and press Enter. A scan will begin comparing the vital Windows system files to the ones stored in a hidden folder. The SFC may prompt you for the location of the i386 directory if any corrupted files are detected, and there are no lo\cal backups available for the corrupt files. Point it to the CD drive letter and click OK. You may have to reboot after this completes, and then run Windows Updates again.
