Winfixer Pop-ups

Post by Jim Landers »

Any suggestions on how to get rid of this *^*#^&! popup ad?.....

Man, you talk about obnoxious! It showed up on my computer yesterday and so far I have'nt been able to remove it. I have Adaware, Spybot, and McCafee, none of them can get rid of it. Image

Anybody have any experience with this one and suggestions on how to remove it without going into the registry?.....

Try the Microsoft "Beta" Anti-spyware. The Microsoft program will also recover your home page if it's hijacked.

I've found each spyware program tends to find things others do not find.

You don't say what version of Windows and what browser you are using, but Win XP (with SP2) has a built in pop up blocker that I find blocks more than Norton pop up blocker does.

One note, I also have Firefox and Opera on my PC and I find none of them block any more than I.E. with the microsoft pop up blocker enabled.

I just removed a WinFixer infection this week, on a customer's computer. I used MS AntiSpyware to do it. I recommend it to anybody running Windows 2000 or newer.

BTW: Believe it or not, WinFixer had a Removal entry in Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs. I used it first, then followed up with MSAS, which cleaned up the residuals. Try removing it this way, then followup with MSAS.

I advise you that your Internet Explorer settings need to be tightened up regarding downloading and installing programs via MSIE.

Jack and Wiz, thank you guys for your responces.

I'm using XP with SP 2 update. I downloaded and ran the Beta Anti spyware program you suggested. I think it fixed part of the problem but not all of it. But it did help get rid of some of the bad stuff. Thanks again.

My wife, who is much more computer savvy than I am, searched around the McCafee security forums and found a free fix that she downloaded and ran. It seems to have fixed the problem. Here is a link to the fix if anyone else needs it. Thanks again.

Jim

Jim; I seemed to of picked up this little vicious thingy a couple days ago...and also cleaned it with a few different spywear programs including the new beta one from MS...but you are right it does not remove it.....THEN I tried that removal tool your wife found and WALA....clean as a whistle. That removal tool is awesome because it finds it and "RE-NAMES" it(that's the key to removal) then it's able to remove it from your computer.
So Thank you soooo much and please thank your wife too> what a great fix.
Oh and this only seems to be linked through IE browser; as the firefox never popped it up...>and I have every anti spywear and popup blockers and anitvirus/spam/firewall known to mankind...ha...and it still got through somehow.
Gosh these hackers are good....
I'm also noticing the IE browser is working sooooo much better and faster; after removing that.
Good going man.
