By not following a link to the site, but by directly typing www.paypal.com into your web browser's location box.

Go to:
https://www.paypal.com/
However, do not click on that link--I know it's ok but you don't. The thing to worry about are clickable links in emails etc--they may say one thing but can hide a different address. So what you should do is type the above address into your browser and then bookmark the site when you get there.
But you know what--wait until someone else here on the forum comes along and says "yes, that's the way to do it". That way you have confirmation that I am not steering you wrong. Hey--let paranoia guide you. There's some nasty stuff out there and you don't know me from Adam.......

Hey Folks, watch out for the "Dear valued PayPal member :"...then it continues to ask you to update your PERSONAL information , or your account will be suspended....FRAUD !!!
When you place your cursor over the ht*p://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_login-run , you will see where it's really coming from...and believe me, it's not legit !
It looks real good , but it's not from PayPal...

I always advise typing the URL into your browser's addressbar/locationbar.
As noted by an earlier poster, the correct address is https://www.paypal.com .
A note about the fraudulant email links. Holding your cursor over the link may not reveal the true destination URL, if you have Javascript enabled. The scammer may have added a Javascript onMouseOver event to display the PayPal URL in your Statusbar, while hiding the real URL, which probably goes to Turkey (from the ones I've gotten).
The only way you can know the real destination is to view the Source code and look at all the details in the a href= sections.

That site looks exactly like the site I was on from PayPal.ca
I tried to setup an account, but it seems I already had an account setup from way back which I thought didn't exist anymore. I have forgotten the password and they ask me to fax a cover sheet. I don't have a fax.
Can't setup another account because the same address will apply to two similar email addresses. And that's a no no.

Don't know if this helps, but if you goto strings or cds and tapes at the top of this page, if you click to order something, and click the paypal button there is an option to set up a paypal account there.

Just a note on security practices, to anybody who intends to paste the contents of a phishing scam email on this forum...
Disable clickable links by substituting an astersik for one of the Ts in http, ex: ht*p.
This way none of our members, or searchbots, will be tempted to click on a link or follow it to a possible phishing website.
This request does not apply to legitimate links to authority, security, or personal websites.

Thank God for this forum!!! I fell for this yesterday, not knowing a thing. Gave them my check card number. I just had it blocked, and the balance doesn't sound like anything's out of the ordinary. If I wouldn't have stumbled across this thread, I probably would have been cleaned out. And I thought only old people fell for this. Guess 52 is old. And this happened on Comcast, where I haven't received one piece of spam since I started. Whew!!!! Any more info on this would be helpful, or if I should contact anyone. Thanks again, forumites!!
