Importing Personal Folders and Address List

Post by Donny Dennis »

I have a new emachines model T6520 with Windows XP Media Center Edition, and have successfully moved most of the data files from my old emachines model W2260 with Windows XP Home Edition. I have also moved the hard drive from my old computer to the new computer, and set the jumper switches for the new/old hard drives to Master\Slave respectively.

Although I have successfully moved most of the data files from file directories in the slave drive to directories in the master drive I have been unable to import the personal folders and address list from the slave drive to the master drive. I am using Outlook Standard 2003. Can anyone help me?

Thanks much.

I don't have Outlook 2003, but can't you export the info to a file on a disk and then import it into the other program?

some useful info here:

You have to export the files and then import them into the new e-mail program.

Also, you should have left the hard drives set to Cable Select rather than Master/Slave. All newer systems (all that I've seen and I work on PC's) use the Cable Select device type rather than the old Master/Slave.

Jon and Jack:

Thanks much for your responses. Really good information. I took the new computer back to the Geek Squad at Best Buy where I bought it from, and they were unable to retrieve the email\addresses from the old computer. I don't have time today but will try again tomorrow with the information that both of you provided, and hopefully that will work. Will post a response on the forum to let you know if it works. Thanks again for the information and assistance that you have provided.

Jon and Jack;

I have spent most of today trying to import the Outlook Personal Folders and Address List from the hard drive in my old computer to the hard drive in my new computer. I have set both hard drives to cable select, and attempted to follow the methods provided but have been unsuccessful.

I appreciate the information, and assistance that both of you provided but I have probably done something such as corrupt the Outlook files. Anyway, it's time to move on to other things.

Thanks again.

Go to the program on the "old" computer, Then under the File menu, choose Export, Choose address book, and follow the directions. It will output the information to a file. Save that file to a disk. Then go to the "new" computer, go to the File menu, choose import, then select the file from the disk in question and there you go. You can also import messages in the same way. You have to export to a file, then import into the receiving program. If you don't have the disks set up for sharing, it wont work. Either use a floppy, or a USB storage device. It will most likely not be a big file.
[This message was edited by Jon Moen on 19 September 2005 at 05:44 PM.]
