MP3 Files???

Can someone tell me, please, about MP3 files? How are they recorded and/or played off the internet? What hardware or software is needed? Thanks, Larry J.

Larry, I always transfer my recordings to the computer as high quality wave files (.wav). I just happen to use a simple program called "Nero wave editor" for this. I do this first because I use the wave files to transfer to CDs.
I then use an mp3 converter to convert the wave files to mp3. An mp3 converter program allows you to choose the quality (bit rate) of the mp3 file. Nero has an mp3 converter but I found another converter which is very convenient to use. It is called "switch".
I experimented with mp3 files to choose a compromise between quality and file size. I chose to convert to mp3 at a 32kb bit rate. This makes all my songs into a file that is between 400kb and 900kb.
At my location out here in the sticks, I can only get access to a slow dial up internet connection. My files will download in 4 to 7 minutes on my connection.
Some websites use a higher quality,larger file for their mp3s. Therefore, I can't find the time to listen to them. You can check my mp3s on my website. They are not high quality but they do serve the purpose.

Thanks John,
I talked with the bass player in my band this weekend, our resident computer expert, and he also explained quite a bit to me about MP3 files. I will probably stick with tapes and CDs for now... Larry J.
