Whats with this red shield that suddenly appeared on my computer with thr message about all the good stuff they were going to do for like clean my disk etc etc etc for a one time cost of $29.95. This also shows the internet explorer e w/a circle. Is this legit? I thought I cleaned my disk, defraged etc through programcalled accessories. CC

I Googled it, and I don't see any reason why I'd want to keep it on my PC. A couple of links that you may find helpful are here and here.
The native Windows accessories (defrag, error checking, etc) are good utilities, and they should be used periodically for good hard drive hygiene. They do not offer any protection from adware, spyware, or viruses. Not running anti-spyware and anti-virus software anytime one is connected to the internet is an invitation to disaster, IMO.
