Dial up accelerator

My dial up ISP thought they would do me a favor and hooked me up to a free "accelerator" thing. I can search the web alot faster now. But why are all the pictures blurred now? even when i shut it off, they are still blurred now!

Yeah--I tried Earthlink's free accelerator last year. I was actually underwhelmed by the "acceleration"--didn't seem like much improvement but I didn't give a too much testing time--and yes, one of its tricks (since there ain't no free lunch) is to reduce the resolution of graphics so that they load faster. I seem to recall that it intruded into the computer's more universal settings, thus degrading other graphic viewing besides just real time downloads and thus and therefore I dumped the program by the side of the road somewhere and it hasn't found its way home. Coulda drownded it in a gunny sack but that would have been cruel.

I have used Propel Accelerator, which is a subscription add-on to any normal dialup ISP, and it has various image quality options in the configuration settings. The medium setting (default) cause a slight degradation of jpegs and color changes in gifs and background colors. It also allows you to right click on an image an choose the option to render it at full quality, or to even reload the entire page at full quality. You should check the help file to see if your accelerated service provides you with an over-ride option.

Broadband is great (I'm on RoadRunner) but DSL has restrictions. You can only be a certain distance from the Telco central office (max 15000 ft) and it has to be straight copper between the telco and your residence (no repeaters, fiber,etc). That eliminates many potential DSL customers.

Also the wire gauge should be 24 or better. If there is 26 gauge in the loop, dsl distance degrades quickly. DSL loops must be metalic, however, some ISP's are providing fiber to the "neighborhood", apartment building, campus, etc. and installing the dsl equipment at the farend.

There can't be any bridgetaps in the loop either. Telco records are terrible and it's quite expensive to have the bridgetaps removed.

I tried AT&T's accelerator and the picture quality was bad, so I eliminated it.
