Defrag

Post by jolynyk »

I tried defrag my computer, & it would only go about 2%, so I tried to defrag in Safe Mode .. It went a bit more, then stopped & said I must run Scan Disk first.. So I ran Scan Disk, then ran Defrag, & it went to 10%. But then again quit..
Is there another program that I can use to get it to defrag, or can I do something else to get this one to defrag...
Thanks.... John

What Operating System are you using? It sounds like you have something other than Windows XP.

If you are starting Windows in safe mode, there should not be any interruptions that causes defrag to restart.

There are other defrag programs, but for the most part, the Windows supplied program is perfectly adequate. You need to figure out what is causing it to stop.

If your defrag utility is freezing up and giving messages to run scandisk this is often a sign that your hard drive has developed bad sectors. Bad sectors basically signal that a hard drive is on the way out. The sectors can sometimes be repaired by scandisk but the fix will no doubt be temporary since a drive that has begun to show bad sectors will continue to do so. I've even gone so far as to low level format a drive to fix bad sectors and it worked....but only for a little while.
Of course it may be something else...I assume you have any screensavers disabled before you start to defrag? A screensaver starting up will jam defrag too. If I were you I'd back up anything you really want to save on your drive though, in case it becomes unusable.

Did you turn off the task manager and screen saver? If so, run ScanDisk again and make sure the box is checked for Thorough and Fix Problems, too.

Good luck!

My wifes memory is better then mine, I forgot I once had the same problem on a win 98 machine. The solution was to run scandisk from dos. It would not run from windows. You have to hit a function key during boot to get the dos prompt. Maybe that's where the F2 comes in, but I believe it's F8 on a lot of computers.
