CD-RW that writes labels

Post by Ray Minich »

Last nite on one of them Dell commercials they were describing a CD-RW drive that writes a label to the label side of the blank by "light writing" the label onto the blank. Anybody seen one of these yet? Do they take a special CD-RW blank? Looks kinda neat.

<< I think I'll stick with my Ink Jet printables right now, they're cheaper and more colorful.

Cheaper, even when the cost of replacing the ink cartridges is compared to the marginal increase in CD-RW discs? Just wondering.

You have a lot more options, as you can print almost anything you want on the CD with the Epson CD printers.

I haven't seen the HP drive, but from what was presented here, it is limited.

I buy CD-R's in bulk, on-line, and the last batch I ordered was .22 ea for Taiyo Yuden (Spelling?) which are considered some of the best CD-R blanks available.

Dickie -

Yeah, looks like it might be workable in your situation.

There was a discussion here recently about the cost of inkjet cartridges. I own a Lexmark Z51, and it costs me over $60 to replace my two cartridges.

I don't print enough to even use all the ink before they run dry, and refilling them proved more trouble than it was worth, for me. I've decided to get out of the inkjet business.

The lightscribe burning is rediculous. I tested one out and it took about 30 minutes to do. That is insane and it looks like crap. Just get an Epson R200 and it'll look 100x better and cost less.

Neato has high-gloss, clear, and gold foil labels which probably looks pretty good. I've never used them but after reading this, I might consider it.

This is from www.strl.co.uk you do need a special type of cr-r or dvd-r new disc avaiable now usuallly say if hey are printable Have seen oher models and makes needs a USB connection and a mains socket.
CD / DVD Direct Printing

A third method of labelling your CDR/DVDRs is to print directly onto the disc using a thermal printer. The TDK LPCW-50 (right) is a basic thermal printer.

The text /images are prepared using a computer and then the disc is loaded into the printer to produce a crisp professional looking finish. The printer can print onto many different surfaces including metallic.

Check out the Primera Z1 thermal printer. Only $139.00 replacement ribbon cartridges are around $19.00 for blacl or blue or any other color that they offer. Thermal printable CDR's are not expensive and you get a great looking disk when you are done.

I've heard that the laser etching is a lot slower than inkjet printing. Can anyone confirm this?

I design my inkjet CDs to make use of the white background. I'm still using the original cartridges that came with the Epson printer. The print dialog shows the ink level of all six wells. I can see that it would use a lot if you used big solid color areas.
