Is it necessary to run Scandisk so often?

Post by Wayne Carver »

Such as an improper shutdown? How can I disable it from automatically running in Win98? Seems like I could just run it weekly from a schedule or when needed.

If you do an "improper" shutdown, you want scandisk to run. There is a chance something was glitched on the hard drive and scandisk will generally find it and many times be able to correct it.

Otherwise it doesn't need to be run more frequently than about once a month. About once a month run scandisk then defrag the hard drive. With Win98, start Windows in the "safe mode" then run it. If you try to run it in the normal Windows it will never complete because of running programs, unless you get "enditall2" and run that first to shut everything down - but you don't really need enditall2, just do in the safe mode.

Thanks Jack for the info. I already have Enditall on my pc and i like the way it works. I just put a lock on the stuff i want to keep running. I haven't thought about using it before running scandisk or defrag though.

Al, if you have Windows XP, you don't need it. It's only for older operating systems to shut down everything except what is essentially needed and then only for a few tasks such as the scandisk and defrag. When I had the older operating systems I would also use it when I burned CD's. But, there's no other need for it. Once you run enditall or enditall2, you will need to restart Windows to get full functionality back.

Do a search on google for enditall2 (the current version). It was only available from a PC magazine download. I haven't checked for a while.

On my last reply the link is for Enditall 1st edition. The following link is for Enditall2. A did a search and people were using both versions with XP with the 2nd version being preferred. I use the 1st version and win98.

The easiest thing to do is to hit the "x" key when Scandisk starts. You can edit the "msdos.sys" file, and change the parameter that calls for running Scandisk, but that can cause problems when you're running anti-virus software, as the software will think the change was made by virus code.

Just hit the "x". It's easier and safer.
