If you don't have PowerPoint, Microsoft offers a free viewer on their website. There is also one for Word.

.pps is a slide show that usually has music and the slides automaticlly advance.
.ppt is a traditional powerpoint type file that can be altered and are advanced manually, although you can pre set slide change times.
