Monitor Question

Post by Jody Carver »

Hi Guys

Thank you for your help regarding freeze ups
I appreciate and now I have another question.

I purchased a new flat screen Sony LCD and I noticed when I boot up or shut down when the backround is black, I noticed a tiny pin head
size red spot. It's not visible other than when the backround is black when booting or shutting down. Could this be a pixel that is
showing? and if so what's in store for me? will this get more pronounced or is it common
with some monitors.

Any suggestions will be welcome

Thanks

That's a "Stuck Pixel".

They are not unusual. Most manufactors will not return a new one unless it has several stuck pixels. They claim that is would cost too much to produce 100% perfect screens.

Some people claim that gently rubbing it can fix it in some cases. I've never seen this work, but it's worth a try.

My advice is to not worry about it. Make it your friend.

Give it a name.

Joey,

I thought you were not supposed to touch that kind of screen. Am I Wrong?

I learn something every day here. I have seen computer whizzes run their finger across the screen fairly hard and didn't seem to do any damage.

Smart Move, Jody. I am thinking of getting a LCD monitor and get rid of the heavy old monster I have now....al Image Image

I have a Gateway LCD monitor and it has one "bad" pixel. It doesn't get in the way of anything and as it's white It's rarely noticed at all.

Many LCD manufacturers or vendors will not take one back unless, as was noted, it has several "stuck" pixels (I saw one place, on line, that was selling LCD monitors and it stated it could not be returned for bad pixels unless it had more than 6).

If the makers policy is to not replae it unless there are 5 bad pixels, and you have one bad pixel, there's a chance your replacement will be worse.

I'd keep it.

Roy, you can touch a LCD screen.

Here's some discussion about it: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=33205
[This message was edited by Joey Ace on 19 March 2005 at 05:44 AM.]

Thanks, Joey. That's good info. We have a laptop with a liquid crystal display and have been trying to be very cautious not to touch it. Perhaps the trick in touching a screen lies in the use of a soft cloth. Our son (a super-good computer expert who is president of Computer Corp. of Central Florida) told us that touching a lcd screen with you bare fingers is "not a good thing."

Better safe than sorry.

Thanks again.

I must be lucky because I have several TFT monitors (at least 10) and I've never had a stuck pixel.

By the way, have you noticed that Walmart is now selling 17" TFT monitors for $200 and 19" ones for $300?

I normally run a pair of 17" monitors on my computers (dual video head) but I'm considering upgrading to a pair of 19" ones.

The price is certainly right.
